AWAPUNI CANDIDATES.

LARGE NUMBER DEPART. PROSPECTS OF RED BANK. In view of tho departure of a number of Palmorston North candidate's for Hastings on Tuesday morning, it was particularly : unfortunate that the heavy rain overnight prevented any jumping being attempted at I Awapuni prior to their departure, says a 3 correspondent. Fortunately, beforo the oonj ditions became too bad, tho jumpers had > been very active on tho morning previ- , ously. j Rod Bank, who will contest tho Hawke's Bay Steeplechase, was jumped on Monday morning in company with Corneroff. who claims an engagement in tho Woodlands Hack Steeplechase. Red Bank gavo a much better display than his companion. On Tuesday morning Red Blink was partnered by Elicit on a round on the course proper, Mister Gamp joining in at tho seven furlong post. Red Bank was in the van throughout, and stayed thoro to tho end. to lead Mister Gamp homo, with Elicit beaten 1 off. Red Bank went particularly well. Arrowhead and Evoning Horo, who claim flat engagements at Hastings, wero companions in a fivo furlong gallop. Thoy ' kept together right into tho straight, where 1 Arrowhead drew clear. Arrowhead is on the improve and should not disgrace himself at tho fixture. Evening Horo does not appear to handle tho heavy going too well. Moutoa Treasury and Llyn Dhu, both of whom figure in the Heretaunga Handicap, slipped over six furlongs. Moutoa Treasury forced the pace throughout, and thon had sufficient in reserve to hold off Llyn Dhu in tho run homo. Moutoa Treasury failed at Otaki, but might soon show that that form wua wrong. Llyn Dhu might bo better favoured by a longer distance. Potoaform went out to run six furlongs alone, but was stopping very badly at the close, and should tho going be heavy his prospects under his heavy poundage do not look particularly bright. ■ Two other members of Mrs. McDonald's team. Blacksmith and Magio Land, were partners over five furlongs, tho former finishing in front. \Both will figure in tho Trial on the second day. Incidentally, Blacksmith is doing well at the jumping branch, and he outdistanced Llyn Dhu in a round over tho battens on Monday morning. Cornoroff and Winloch are two other Awapuni candidates to competo at Hastings, but their tasks on Tuesday wero easy ones, while Airforce was restricted to pace work. Although Birkbeck will not mako tho trip to Hastings, Mrs. McDonald took through a team of eight by motor-lorry on Tuesday, for, in addition to the six sho will havo racing at Hastings, Bluo Paper and Elicit were also included. Tho former wilf como in at Napier Park, while Elicit will havo his schooling continued in preparation for Trentham. Democratic, who was to havo come in on the second day at Hastings, will be an absentee, L. Knapp's candidato having boon treated to a few days' spell in tho paddock. While Birkbeck likewise an absentee. the trainer will now havo tho services of A. McDonald for his other candidate, Red Bank.

TRAINING AT HAWERA.

TRACK SODDEN AFTER RAIN. [by telegram.—own correspondent.] HAWERA. Thursday. Tho weather this morning was fino for training operations at Hawera. Tho grass traok, through overnight rain, was sodden, but not definitely heavy. Ngawhine ran three furlongs well out on tho grass in 42a Tentcall finished a round by coming homo ovet the last two furlongs smartly. Copey and Airtight worked nt three-quarter paco on the sand over a couple of rounds Prince 'Desmond sprinted two furlongs in 275. Banbridge ran the furlongs of his work in 28s comfortably. Son o' Mino did two rounds of tho sand track at a good three-quarter pace. Mendip and Mount Shannon were companions over five furlongs in 1.10. Tho Warden took 55s over four furlongs without being ridden out. Valp're and Four Roods ran the laßt three furlongs of their work in 435. Orazon&, finished in front of Coma over flvo furlongs covered in 1.10 1-5. J. Fryer gave Arohibald useful half-pace work on tho sand. 1 Coalbag beat Araukuku over fivo furlongs by half a length in 1.9. Pikimai (Conway) jumped splendidly in a round of tho schooling hurdles. The steeplechaser Maidos went a working gallop on the sand over a mile, hitting out in good stylo. Gowanlea, Kiosk and Anbridge performed smartly by getting to the end of their halfmile in 52 l-ss. Double Red and a number of two-year-olds wero out exercising. Calamine sprinted three furlongs down tho back. Jokeform finished a length in front of Biforto over four furlongs in 6315. Just John and Waitaunaha accomplished usoful

pace work.

TRIP TO VICTORIA.

GOLD CUP'S PROGRAMME. Judging by his tasks of late, F. W. Ellis is getting the Melbourne-owned freMing Gold Cup ready for an early return to his nativo State of Victoria, Bays a Southland cojrespondent. Ho is big and burly at piesent, but ho hits out on tho tracks with a freedom that augurs well for his futuro when ho can bo galloped seriously on Melbourno courses. It is understood that Ellis will tako a select string to Australia n©.<t month, in which caso Gold Cup may bo accompanied by (he locally-owned mare Rod Sea and perhaps a maiden performer. TRENTHAM TRIAL PLATE. STRONG TWO-YEAR-OLD ENTRY. Two-year-olds have a good rocord in the Trial Plato at Trentham which' is not surprising, for they aro all but threo-ycar-olds at the' timo of tho raco. and havo a null in tho weights of 111b and 13lb against their, elders, says tho Evening Post. It iB unusual to find an older horso of any quality eligiblo for this event, which is for horses that have not won a raco of 100 sovs. Arisus is a useful two-yeaT-old from Wanganui, and F. D. Jones has nominated Limerick's brothor, Duuravon. and his Australian purchase. Craigavon, who is actually a, winner, but not of tho specified amount. S. J. Reid has ougaged the English-bred Intrudor, who is a very promising horse. King Musket is another Trontham juvenile about whom moro will be heard later, and Princo Desmond, a close rolation to Mirousonta, Kiosk, and Just So, from all accounts should have won a race at Foilding at Eastor. Tho Otaki placo-fillors, Paßs On and Jayson, are a usoful pair, and according to his priva.fi reputatiqa, Vandyke, tho brother to Paleta in J. H. Jefferd't. stable, is above tho ordinary. Terra Firma. Dick Whittington, and Super Ruler, latolv returned from Sydney, make up a useful list. Of the oldor horses Air Laddie, Snow Prince, Royal Visitor and Punchestown. aro probably the best, but the juvenile section may bo too strong for them.
