HAWK'S BAY OPENING.

TO-DAY'S PROGRAMME. PROSPECTS IN STEEPLECHASE. MATU AND PONJOLA FANCIED. The Hawko's Bay Jockey Club's Winter Meeting will be held to-day and to-morrow. Our Wellington correspondent telegraphod last evening that weather conditions were promising and that tho Hastings courso was in excellent condition for this time of tho year; Following are dotails of the fields, with a reviow of the proßpects in each race by our correspondent:— WOODLANDS STEEPLECHASE, Of £150; 2 miles. Bt. lb. Bt. lb, Jen 10 11 Master Arch 9 0 Flying Swift . 10 7 Corneroff .... 9 0 Kovno 9 12 Hillcullus ... 9 0 Wyeford . . . 9 11 Timi Poura ..90 Sir Moment . 9 6 Bon Aryan ..90 Tannvorth ... 9 0 Winnigan ... 9 0 Jon has been fairly successful over hurdles and in recent schooling over country has displayed jumping ability. Flying Swift, after his win in the Grandstand Steeplochaso at Wanganii last month, looks the form horae. Sir Moment waß third to Aurora Borealis and Birkbeok in thi3 race last year and his second to Avro in a hurdlo race at Otaki a fortnight ago has to be remembered. Kovno is another whose chances cannot be ignored. The public may support FLYING SWIFT. SIR MOMENT, KOVNO. WHAKATU HURDLES, Of £150; 1J miles k st. lb. Bt. lb. Zippor .... 10 B High Society . 9 0 Air Forco . . 913 Purseful .... 9 0 Wyeford . . . 9 13 Whakaua ... 9 0 Zippor is an ideal typo for a hurdler and knows the course, having won the Karamu Hurdles last April. He is a half-brother to Landbird, winner of tho Great Northern Hurdles in 1926. Air Force waß only narrowly beaten by Vivo at Wanganui, but Wyeford, who was third on that occasion, looks a better proposition here. Wyeford won well on the second day at Otaki, Avro, the fifst day's winner, and Air Forco. in the places. Tho order of favouritism may be ZIPPOR. WYEFORD, AIR FORCE. KIDNAPPERS FLAT. HANDICAP, Of £110; 6J fur. at. lb. Bt. lb. Brown Susar . 10 4 Hystrido ... 9 0 Lady Lucerne . 9 7 Rigoletto ... 9 0 Crown Link 9 5 Rakaroa ... 9 0 King Manu . 9 5 Royal Songster 9 0 Wedding Bells 9 8 Barracouta ..90 Evening Hero 9 2 Highwayman .90 Winlock ... 9 2 Brown Sugar ran second to Cadland at Otaki and may bo close to showing'her best form. King Manu has only to repeat the form ho showed at the last Hastings meeting, when he ran third to Werata and Bernera to bo very hard to beat. Winloch is an improving three-year-old with two wins at Marlborough to her credit and she will be ridden by Roy Reed. Evening Hero and Wedding Bells aro also possibilities. The elect of investors may be KING MANU, WINLOCH. BROWN SUGAR HAWKE'B BAY STEEPLECHASE, Of £350; 3 mile*. st. lb. Bt. lb. Ponjola . • . 10 11 Kowhatu ... 9 0 Brigadier Bill 10 7 Handy .... 90 Matu . , . . 10 5 Master Arch . 9 0 Red Bank . . 911 / This race, the chief event of the day, will aee Matu and Poniola, who both disappointed at Ellerßlie, endeavour to reinstate themselves. Matu is tho more likely of the two to have improved since, tho Great Northern meeting. Red Bank looks the only possiblo source of danger,- for he is a great jumper. Chief fancies are lively to bo MATU. PONJOLA; RED BANK. WINTER HANDICAP, Of £110; 9 fur. at. lb. Bt. lb. Grattus . . .10 11 Whakaari ..95 Couragoous . . 10 10 Primax ... 9 0 Tahoma ... 10 0 Panorama ... 9 0 Mothplane ..98 Royal Court ..90 Best Friend . 9 6 Adventua ... 9 0 Grattus disappointed at Ellerslio and Tahoma's efforts at Hawera and Wanganui were also unsuccessful. Tahoma has been working well recently and may show a roturn to form. Whakaari and Primax, on their seconds at tho last Hastings meoting, must be seriouslv considered and Best Friend shaped well at Otaki. Moat attention may bo given by investors to WHAKAARI, PRIMAX, BEST FRIEND.

HASTINGS HANDICAP, Of £110; 6 fur. st. lb. st. lb. Potoaform . .10 13 Primax ... 9 0 Shortly .... 10 1 Kimbo ... 9 0 Brown Sugar-. 10 1 Glasslough ..90 Manifesto . . 913 Lordlike ~90 Taranto ... 911 Highland Mystery Keen .... 910 90 Arrowzone ..97 Courtship ..90 Arrow Head ..94 High Heather 9 0 If Brown Sugar starts in -this race in preference to tho Kidnappers Flat and the Herotaunga Handicap she may bo a distinct possibility. They aro a mixed lot. Arrowhoad is one who should run well, while Lordlike, with a strong rider available under the winter scale of weights, has only to reproduce track form to bo dangerous. Three whoso prospects muy bo favoured aro ARROWHEAD, LORDLIKE, BROWN SUGAR.

. HERETAUNGA HANDICAP, Of £150; 6 fur. et. lb. st, lb. Bold Front . . 10 0 Llyn Dhu ..92 Queen's Choice 10 0 Moepai .... 9 0 Chopin ... 90 Golden Shadow Aston .... 9 6 9 0 Moutoa Treasury Paiko .... 9 0 9 6 Brown Sugar . 9 0 Bornera . . 9 2 This race is something of a problem owing to the diverso class. Queen's Choice has been going well on the tracks and Moutoa Treasury has also shown improvement in her work. Aston is fast and may see it out in this field. Bernera is also bound to have friends and tho best supported may bo ASTON, BERNERA. MOUTOA TREASURY. FLYING SWIFT AND KOWHATU. Flying Swift and Kowhatu left Wanganui for Hastings on Tuesday, Flying Swift was suffering from a soro heol, but it did not appear to trouble him much. aB before leaving he gave a fine display of jumping in clearing eevon obstacles. Kowhatu has not done any schooling recently, but he is such a, good natural jumper that ho can be dopnded upon to run well in his engagements. RIDING ENGAGEMENTS. Tho following riding engagements have been announced:— A. McDonald.—Red Bank, Llyn Dhu. R. Reed.—Arrowhead, Mothplane, Winloclj, Moutoa Treasury. T. Green.—Bernora, Evening Hero, Potoaform. A. Tricklohank.—Ponjola, A. Jenkins.—Matu.
