STEEPLES CONTESTS.

SUCCESS OF RADIATE. GOOD FINISH BY VALVES. DIAMOND JACK'S EASY WIN. [BY TELEGRAM.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] TIMARU, Thursday. The Otipun Steeplechase provided an interesting contest, resulting in an attractive "viotory for the oddß-on favourite Radiate, who thus repeated his success in the samo rnco last year, Tho light-weight, Valves, was responsible ' for the pace from the start and led throughout tho first circuit from 3 French Fleet, Radiato and Radiac. * Radiate made his only bad jump at the fourih fence, but made up his lost ground rounding the far turn. Radiac ran up to Valves going past the stand tho second timo. with Radiate and French Fleet handy. Valves was in trouble entering tho back I stretch and Radiate, with ft masterly effort at tho Beven furlongs post, went to tho front, but Radiao outjumped him at tho next obstacle and led round the top and into the straight from Radiate and French J Fleet, Radiate'cut off a lot of ground rounding the turn to tho last fenco, and, beating Radiao over the obstacle, bo was not troubled in the final run to win convincingly by two lengths from Valves, who took L a fresh leaso over the last half-milo and finished in a surprising manner. French , Fleet was three lengths back, two lengths in front of Radiac, with Scion tailed off. I Tho remaining starter, Nightraid, ran of! in tho first round when occupying the rear ! position. Gala Day was made a 24-ticket better favourite than Tunamoe for the Gladstone Hack and Hunters' Steeplechase, but after going well in fourth, place for six furlongs he crashed at tho second of tho stand doubles. Diamond Jack went to the front going 1 out of the straight from Tunamoe, Bonatie, Gay Jim, Barrington and Parador. Gay ! Jim made a forward move along the back, but a bad jump stoadied him, while Bonatie fell at the five furlong fonce, and Parador ran of!. Diamond Jack at this stage had a useful lead from Tunamoo, with Gay Jim tailing off. The leader was challenged by Tunamoe, but once over he wont on to win by four lengths from Tunamoo. Gay Jim was in third place at this obstacle, but broke down, and Barrington came from a long way back to gain tho minor place, ten lengths away. Goldtown, Deportment and Te Haunui completed tho course, but well down the running.

HACK FLAT EVENTS.

JOCK O' HAZELDEAN'S EFFORT. Probably owing to A. E. Ellis being in the saddle, Deßort Song was installed a solid favourite for tho Electric Stakes, and there was also good support for Arrow Maid and Charmeuse. The three provided the placed division. From an even start Desert Song was the first to show out, but was soon joined by Charmouse and Night Lark, and the two raced in line in front of Arrow Maid and Bellbird to tho home turn. Charmeuse took charge when turned for. home, and had the raco in hand from that stage, winning comfortably by two lengths from Arrow Maid, who cut down Desert Bong in the last few strides to beat him by half-a-length for second honours. Tho good field of 14 paraded for the Rosewill Hack Handicap, Toawai being made a . staunch favourite, carrying doublo the tickets entrusted lo the oecoiid choice, Meitui. He an outside position, however, and, not getting away well in a snap start, was never dangerous. Kentish Lady waa ' the early leader and led round the top and into the' straight from Fair Money, Jock o' Hazeldean, High Speed and Meitui. Kentish Lady retired inside the distance, and in the best finish of the meeting Jock o' Hazeldean, after meeting with a disappointment half-way down the run home, B<jueezed through on the rails and got up to snatch victory from First Money by a neck. Meitui was. over a length away, and then came Kentish Lady, Sweet Refrain, Toawai and Tom Major.

DEFEAT OF RANELAGH.

BLACK DUKE FINISHES WELL. For the Teschemaker Handicap, the public selected Caraiaader, Ranelagh and Black Duke iu that order, with only 60 tickets between them, and they filled the places. Royal Mint was first to find his feet, and was joined by Ranelagh going out of the straight. This pair, racing abreast, led along the back from Black Duke and Evening. together, clsar of Arch Arrow and Camisader. This was the order to the straight entrance, where Ranelagh shook off Royal Mint and with Ellis sitting still on him as ho turned for home, his victory seemed assured. Black Duke, however, who had been going well throughout, threw out a challenge inside tho distance, and although Ranelagh fought doggedly, Black Duke wore him down to win by a length. Camisader, who was well back at the home turn, finished on with a burst of speed to beat on tho post for third money. Royal Mint was .next, followed at intervals by Arch Arrow and Mount Boa.

. EEMAINING EVENTS. ,

FAVOURITES RUN WELL. Investors opened proceedings auspiciously by making Antrim Boy favourite for tho Tekapo Hurdles Handicap, and ho had the race won a long way from homo. He and Pangolin set a solid pace after crossing the first hurdle. Pangolin was beaten at tho last fenco. and Antrim Boy went on to win with ease by a length from Troilus, with a gap of three lengths to Lancer, who did good work over the last two ftirlongs to boat Pangolin on the poßt for third money. John Bradbury and Glenrowan passed twothirds of tho machine total between them in tho Smithfield Handicap, and while the former failed to race up to expectations, Glenrowan recorded a decisivo victory. Ho lost a little ground (it the start, but by tho time the far turn was reached, lie had worked his wuy on the outside to tho front and had a clear break from Haze, Membo, John Bradbury and Quarterdeck. At the straight entrance, his rider did not have to move on him in tho run home, and ho had two lengths to spare at the post from Haze, who beat the fast-finishing First Raid by half a length. Quarterdeck was close up next. Inevitable was supported down to a short prico in the Doncaster Handicap, and duly materialised. Ho was never far away from the leaders, and after allowing Rascal to lead into tho straight he took charge inside the distance, and although having to be shaken up in tho last few strides to throw off a challenge by Smithereens, ho had something in hand to win by half a length. First Raid was only three-quarters of a length away in third place. This was A. E. i Ellis' third win during the day, bringing him within three of H. Gray's total for tho i season.
