NEW ZEALAND TOBACCO.
PROSPECTS FOR INDUSTRY,
BRIGHT FUTURE PREDICTED
A bright future for the tobacco-growing industry in New Zealand is lickl out by Mr. F. Adamson, a director of tho.United Kingdom Tobacco Company, Ltd., who arrived at Auckland by the Ulimaroa yesterday. Mr. Aditinson's headquarters arc in London, and ho makes periodical visits to Australia and New Zealand.
"On my last visit to the Dominion I inspected several tobacco fields," Mr. Adamson said. "My impression was that when growers have the opportunity of studying the various grades required by the manufacturers they will be able to produce tobacco which, blended with imported tobacco, will meet all requirements. There arc prospects of the establishment in the future of an export trade in New Zealand tobacco. Some time ago my company purchased 23 v OGOIb. and used it for blending with Virginian tobacco (or cigarettes. The experiment was quite satisfactory." For tho purposes of cigarette manufacture, New Zealand tobacco was slightly better than that grown in Australia, Mr. Adamson said. The pipe tobacco was good, but it also required blending. The standard tobacco was that grown in tho eastern States of America. It would remain in favour until there was a change in tho public palate, and it would take many years of blending 'before this occurred.
The tobacco business generally was still prosperous. If anything, tlie demand for tobacco was increasing, and the industry could not lose ground.
