INTOXICATED IN CAR.
DRIVER FOUND ASLEEP. AN EARLY MORNING DISCOVERY. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] HAMILTON, Monday. A charge of being intoxicated while in charge of a motor-car was preferred against Edward Fitzwilliam, aged 25, a Rotorua service car driver, before Mr. Wvvern Wilson, S.M., in the Hamilton Magistrate's Court to-day. Defendant pleaded guilty. Senior-Sergeant Sweeney said the facts wore that accused arrived in Hamilton from Rotorua yesterday and was to have returned with a load of passengers today. Ho drove round with some friends and then went to a hotel, where he had liquor. The 'attention of two constables was attracted to the noise of car brakes in London Street at ono o'clock this morning. On investigation, they found accused at the wheel of the car asleep. A young woman was beside him in the car. She was also asleep. Accused was found to bo intoxicated. Mr. P. H. Watts said accused had been • in the service of one motor company as a driver for seven years, and had never been in trouble before. At the time of his arrest he was not engaged on his employers' business. The magistrate said the case presented serious features. Jf accused repeated his offence when driving on business, lie might endanger tho lives of his passengers. The circumstances led one to suppose that accused was not leading the life of a man of sober habits. Accused was fined £lO, and his driver's licence was suspended until December 31.
