SPEED OF MOTORISTS.
DAMAGE CAUSED TO ROADS s / ; ' FACTOR IN PROSECUTIONS.
' COUNTY COUNCIL'S OPINION.
The recent defence by the Auckland Automobile Association of motorists charged with travelling at 40 miles ail hour and over on roads in the Piak,j County was mentioned at a meeting the Waitemata County Council yestei. day by the engineer, Mr. A. Murrav. '
Mr. Murray said it was proved tlhafc the speeds had not been dangerous to the public, but the Piako County Council held that the damage done to the'roads as a result of tho speeding should bo considered.
The council supported this opiuion, aai decided to communicate with the Automo- ' bile Association, the Piako County-Council and the Main Highways Board. Miv Murray said that in previous years the county ratepayers had provided moneys for metalling roads recently declared main highways, and this invest menfc was rapidly being destroyed by VI! motorists. Although not travelling ifc a speed dangerous to the public, tie J motorists were, as a result of their undue haste, damaging the lightly-metalled roads. Mr. Murray recalled several instances in which council prosecutions against motorists for similar offences had been dismissed.
