LAWN TENNIS.

INVITATION TOURNAMENT.

SPROULE DEFEATS BARTLEET.

FINALS TO BE PLAYED TO-DAY.

Ideal conditions prevailed for the second day's play in the invitation tournament arranged by the Auckland Lawn Tennis Association. In exciting semifinals the Australians eliminated the local men and in the finals, to be played to-day, C. Sproule will play C. J. Donohoe in the men's singles, while Sproule and Donohoe will be matched against F. E. Kalms and J. T. Teague in the men's doubles.

Teague was the only Australian to lose a match yesterday and E. L. Bartleet, in defeating him 6 —2, 7—5, played a remarkably steady game. Teague won applause from the crowd for his agility and brilliant volleying, but Bartleet always returned to the attack with his sweeping drives. Bartleet won the first set rather easily, but in the second Teaguo put up a much better fight.

In the semi finals Sproule scored a lova set against Bartleet. The Aucklander opened vigorously in the second set and honours were even at the end of four games. However, Bartleet could not keep up the puce and Sproule won 6—2.

The Kalms-Donohoe match provided one of tho finest exhibitions of tennis seen in the tournament. Both playors were evenly matched as far as powerful and accurate driving was concerned. In the first set Donohoe played a dashing game and his overhead work was particularly effective. He took the set 6—3. Kalms opened strongly in the second set, but with the score at three all Donohoe asserted himself with powerful crosscourt drives and won 6—4.

In the men's'doubles Sproule and Donohoe won fairly easilv from Bartleet and E. W. Griffiths, but N. G. Sturt and A. C. Stedman made a great fight against Kalms and Teague. Knowing each other's play well, they combined splendidly and the second set particularly was very exciting. The Australians won the match 6-3, 7-5. An interesting match in tho mixed doubles was that in which Kalms and Miss Marjorie Macfarlane defeated Y. C. Rowlands and Miss Potter 6—l, B—6. In the second set Rowlands played an outstanding game.
