DESERTION FROM SHIP.

WAGES TO BE FORFEITED.
" Yes, I did desert the ship. I was not going to stay and be starved," said John Samuel Brown, fireman, aged 23, when charged in the Police Court yesterday with desertion from the steamer Pialco, at Gisborne, on June 6, 1929. Chief-Detective Hammond said accused had shipped on the Piakoiat London last year. He had doserted from the ship at Gisborne in nothing had bcon heard of him until his arrest in Auckland the previous day. He had been convicted for desertion in Timaru last May, and had been sentenced to 14 days' imprisonment. Accused said he had deserted at Gisborne rather than stay on the ship to he starved. After leaving Gisborne he had obtained work in the bush out of Auckland. He had been there all the time until this week, when he came to Auckland to look for another job. Chief-Detectivo Hammond said accused had £l2 due to him in wages from the New Zealand Shipping Company. The magistrate, Mr. F. K. Hunt: Well, he can forfeit the money. Accused was discharged on forfeiture of the wages duo to him.
