SCHOLARS AT PONSONBY

COMMENCEMENT THIS WEEK,

Bible lessons ur ; der the Nelson system will be introduced this week into the four schools controlled by the Ponsonby Schools Committee, namely, Ponsonby, Richmond Road, Curran Street and Bay. field. A plebiscite! was taken at the end of last year when there was a two-thirds majority in favour of the proposal, which was niado by a committee of ministers representing the various denominations. A half-hour lesson a week within school hours will be given to the children, in the fourth, fifth and sixth standards, which will be separately addressed by different speakers. The course, which will be conducted on regular fixed davS in oach of the four schools, comprises the Lord's Prayer, the singing of hymns, a Scripture lesson from an approved syllabus and a closing prayer. Children will be exempted only at tho written request of parents. . f . ■

The innovation will be made at Bayfield school, which is the first of .the schools to be visited, this afternoon. A gift of 1000 New Testaments for use in the schools has been made by Mr. R. A. Laidlaw.
