BY PICADOR; • With a large attendance, good fields and interesting racing and an increase of £BSO in the .'totalisator turnover, .the _Te Aroha Trotting Club's meeting at Herriesville on Saturday passed of! very successfully. On the whole, the'class of horso racing at the meeting was a good deal below metropolitan standard and, the form did not reveal uxi y" thing of more than average ability, although there were no douht a .number of runners who will improve .with racing and probably achieve some success at country meetings elsewhere. Backers fared fairly well in the selection, of winners, most of- which were well backed, the only real surprise being the victory of Brutus in the leading event. Although 'he scored rather comfortably when .confidently backed in. the Waitoa Handicap, Some Dillon failed to make a showing when produced again in the Buakaka Handicap and at present he docs not'appear-to be anything more than a moderate, despite the facF' 'that he has won twice,in his last three silirts. ' The chestnut pacer is seemingly o)>"y ordinary, and. unless he improves considerably, is not likely to win out of his turn. Only for losing considerable ground at the start and being taken out extremely wide when he raced alongside the leaders at the home turn, Black Magic would have scored easily-in the Elstow Handicap.. The black trotter is very unreliable at the barrier, otherwise ho would be as there' is no -doubt that he has' sufficient speed an.d'stamina.to- be capable of winning off his present mark. If he can be induced to leave, the mark correctly in future, be should be an early winner among the slowclass trotters. : r • The soreness displayed by Peter Pirate, who was suffering from corns, must have affected his chance' to some extent in the Te Aroha Trotting Cup, and his effort in finishing second was more meritorious than, it appeared on the Burface. For a, horse that has not done a great deal of racing Peter Pira'te has raced consistently well and any time he is' produced free from sorenesS ho should be capable of a better performance than he registered here, as lie has not yet reached the limit pf this powers. Failure to trot solidly has spoilt excellent proffpeeh for Akenehi on .several- occasion!) this season, but she was caught in the right mood in the Waihou Handicap and won impressively after running through the field to take chargo * about a mile from home. Akenehi should be capable of taking a better record than the one she ijossesses at present, and, now, that she has struck form, she is likely to ndd to her laurels in the very near future.

For a.' horse that was only recently converted from a pacer to it trotter, Lord Haldane trotted well to win tho Elstow Handicap, and he also shaped creditably in the Waihou Handicap, although he did not begin as well nor trot so solidly as on the first occasion. Lord Haldane began his career as a trotter and therefore the change was not so great as with a horse that had raced solely as a pacer. However, he shaped very encouragingly and may achiove further Hiiccesß among the alow-claBS trotters, even though ho might never make a really good horse.
