■ TAKAPUNA CUP.. : . GOOD CONTEST EXPECTED. BY ARCHER. With a nice, field of 12 engaged in the Takapuna Cup, which comes up for decision to-morrow, prospects for an interesting contest are very bright. The topweight, Prodice, has been racing Troll, and, in view of her third with 8.8 over the same distance-in the A.R.C. Handicap and another similar placing- with 8.12 in the Grandstand Handicap, she must receive favourable consideration. However, on recent form, she has no pull over Corinax, who now meets her on lib. worse terms than when he beat her by a head for second place in .the A.R.C. .Handicap and lib. better than when she finished ahead of him in the Grandstand Handicap. On Ellerslie form thero should be little between this pair and wherever .one is the other should not be far away, although the disposition is to favour Corinax, who lias done well lately. In the Shade, at his best, would have on undoubted cKance, • but he has failed badly in his latest outings and .therefore cannot bo recommended before those with recent form. Royal Doulton. in the hands of H. Gray, is- a decided possibility r.nd should beat most of the lightweights, few of whom have-shown any. liking for such a long distance. The final gallops may bring something: into prominence, ' but present indications point to -Corinax, Prodice and Royal Doulton being strongly fancied. STEWARDS' HANDICAP. SPEEDY SPRINTERS ENGAGED. An array of speedy sprinters will contest the Stewards' Handicap at Takapuna tomorrow and the race bears a very open aspect. Prince Val ran a good second to Mervette, who subsequently raced well at Trentham. over seven furlongs at Ellerelie on New Year's Day, and on that running he must be considered. Taneriri is another with recent form to recommend him, but the early speed in a. race of this description might trouble him and here he may bo troubled to hold his own with horses like A war ere, Gold Money and Lady Quex. Lack of condition only beat Gold Money wjien she raced at Ellerslie at the bcsinning of the month, and, now that she is a good deal fitter, she is likely to take considerably more beating. Lady Quex is also reported to bo very well, and, despite several defeats in the meantime, the decisive victory sho attained at her last start on this course must entitle her to respect. White Wings, Refresher and Valuation are lightweight possibilities and the best of these may be Valuation, who has probably ycfc to reveal his absolute best. The draw for post positions may have some effect on the betting, although Gold Money, Lady Quex and Valuation will probably be well supported wherever they draw. NOTES FROM WELLINGTON. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT. J WELLINGTON, Monday, There is a prospect of a fair-sized team of New Zcahndei's being in Sydney at. Easter for the big prizes at Randwick. H. B. Lorigan may be one of the travellers with Oratrix, Cimabue and Concentrate. Much .depends on the state of the track whether Oratrix will be produced at Pahiatua on Wednesday. This mure has como in looking particularly bright; and hus been working well. She galloped a solid mile on Saturday morning at Trentham. She inay -be raced at Woodville next 'mouth,' and if sho and her brother go to Sydney they will leave toward the end of March after' th«' Thompson Handicap meeting at Trentham. Gesture will not be one of the Australian team, as she has no classic engagements in Sydney and would receive prohibitive weights in handicaps.. She has two good engagements later on in the Sires' Produce Stakea at Awapuni and the Champagne Stakes at Ellerslie.'
