answers to correspondents.

" Wager." To Awamutu.—A distiince is defined as, 240 yards. The race in question ■would therefore be one mile and 240 yards. " Sligo." , Mdungaturoto,—lt was an' rounced in Wellington that Hoylake was scratched for the Wellington Cup at 4 p.m. on the 16) h hist.

A BRILLIANT MARE.

FIGURE AT FOUR YEARS OLD.

The New South 'Wales mare Figure tccounted for tho opposition in the decision of the William Rcid Stakes at Moonee /Valley last Saturday in a manner serving to emphasise that aho was entitled to the eulogy that preceded her transportation to Victoria. To defeat the speedy Greenline at a difference of. only 31b. in the race at Moonee Valley shows Figure up in attractive colours. Ficcure is engaged in' the Caulfield futurity Stakes, which event comes up'for decision on February 22. Ihe in question, which is run over seven furlongs at weight-for-age, with penalties end allowances, carries a stake of £3500, £2500 of which goes to the winner. Figure has incurred a 7lb. penalty, which raises her impost to 9.1. Figure was got by Three' (son of The Welkin) from Forfar Lass (daughter of Brakespear), and the fact that she boasts a strain of Cart>ine on ' etch side of her pedigree serves to entourage the belief that the future has a • great deal in store for her. ' NEW TIME RECORD. MILE AND A-HALF IN 2.26 2-5. In the decision of the Zetland Stakes at Svewmarket, England, in the summer of 3928 Gauntlet, a three-year-old by Swynford—Neuve Chapelle was credited with running the mile and a-half attached to that race in 2m 26 2-ss. which was claimed r.s a world's record for the, distance. Gauntlets record was not destined to stand for /ong, and in the list of remarkable performmices on the English turf last -year a four-year-old gelding named Roi des Aulnes, owned by Lord Westmoreland, now stands as the record-breaker. The gelding named won t.ho July Handicap (11 miles) at Leicester in . Qni 26 2-ss. According to the records published;' the: fastest record in America for the distance is 3m -28 3-5»,. ; In 4 US ". IraJia -Gothic, and -Kidaides hold the record Tvjtlv 2m 2955.-= • In New- Zealand 2m 31s rtandfe as'the record for the mile and a-half-journey, Maioha, Insurrection, Bonnie Wilkie, Pilliewinkie and- Star Stranger, being al}' credited with that time. THE TOTALISATOR IN ENGLAND; y OPTIMISTIC ESTIMATE.' ' Lord d'Abernon, ' chairman of .the Thoroughbred Breeders' Association, holds highly-optimistic views of what the introduction of the totalisator on English racecourses is going to effect in matters appertaining to the turf in the Old .Country. He recently offered-the prediction that in one year after the machine had been working on all the principal courses in England it would probably have to handle over £615,000.000. : • MISCELLANEOUS NOTES.

A GREAT JOCKEY. '■ The Australian jock% ." Brownie'* Cars.fske,- who-retired from the saddle in 1928 in to take up training horses, has been prevailed upon to again take a place with the riders. Mr. J. B. Joel is responsible for' the re-entry of Carslake anion? , s the jockeys. That sportsman, for whom Cariilake steered many winners, has given the Australian jockey a handsome retainer for an unlimited period, and he will ride as first jockey to the Foxhill stable. Carslake has not increased in weight during hia absence from the saddle and he has stated he can still ride at 8.5 without difficulty. Carslake has yet to steer the winner of the Derby, but five classic race winners scored in his hands, viz., Keysoe and Salmon Trdut (St. Leger). Tetratema "(Two Thousand Guineas), and Ferry and Silver Urn (One Thousand Guineas). He eteored two winners of the Ascot Gold Cup —Foxlaw (1927) and Invershin (1928). HUNTING. CRY AT TRENTHAM. Hunting Cry having finished unplaced in both the races, he contested at the Wellington meeting, the form displayed by the son of Hunting Song at Trentham rclireves some of the glamour from his winning 'exploits at the Auckland Summer Meeting. --Hunting Cry is not a. colt of robust constitution, and possibly Die racing exacted from him at the summer meeting at Ellerslie had a far more reaching effect on him than was thought for, and that a short respite before being called upon to race again might have been to his <ul"Tantage. , MARES AND TAKAPUNA CUP. In the decision of the TakaDiina Cup last year a trio pf mares in the .sliope of Flying Juliet, (7.13), Prodice (8.2) and Rpyal Doulton (8.0) filled the places. The same niares figure in this year's Takapuna Cup. but on different terms, the trio being weighted as followsProdice 9.0, Royal Doulton 8.0 t.nd Flying Juliet 7.0. VICTORIA'S ST. LEGER HOPE. Csrradale, who finished second to Phar Lap m the Australian Jockey Club's Derby and alfo occupied a like position to the New Zealand gelding, in tho Victoria Derby, is stated to have trained on well in the interval, but apparently an all-round opinion is held that he will have to make very considerable improvement to reverse places with Phar Lap when they again measure strides. Carradale wob running well up 'in the Inst Melbourno Cup contest wljen the beau of the straight was reached, when he ran off. Possibly, aB was stated by somo of the critics, thcro might have been an excuse for Carradale's waywardness at the critical stage of the Melbourne Clip contest, but. oil the other hand, it is contended his running wide might be interpreted in the sense that he had bad enough and, os /the saying .goes, " cut it." Carradale will probably have an opportunity of meeting Phar Lap when the V.R.C. 't. Lfger comes up for.decision at Flcmington in March. .. .THE ROTORUA MEETING. The following were accidentally omitted from the list of nominations for the Flying Handicap, published in yesterday's issue:—! Hiroanta, Loving Cup, Little Toy, Huhano» Xiwinui. • ,
