CANTERBURY GOSSIP.
WORK ON THE TRACKS.
BiT TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] CHRISTCHURCH. Saturday.
Matters were quiet at Riccarton this morning as far as any interesting work was concerned. Practically all the horses in commission were restricted to useful exercise on the plough. All the tracks are at present very hard and a heavy rainfall will be appreciated, as trainers will not feel" disposed to give their horses much galloping until the conditions improve. Sir George Clifford's four-year-old filly Swoopalong broke down badly. . She was being cantered on the plough when she developed 6udden lameness in front and was very sore when leaving the course. It is a coincidence that, three horses of late have suffered similarly on the plough, but no blame can bo attached to the track which, but for being hard underneath a soft surface. is in Bplendid order.
Thf three-year-old gelding Sunny Pal, by Paladin from Sunny. Brook, has joined P. D. Jon»s' team at Riccarton. He is the property of his breeder, Mr. J. "Watson, of Kaitunu, and was in work for a short period la-t season, but later turned out to give him time to furnish. W. Stone leaves for Wellington to-night with Silver Paper and Aspiring, en route to Awapuni. The pair will bo racing at Feilding next week and will remain at Awapuni until after the Christmas meetings. In all probability Stone will make the trip to the Auckland Summer Meeting,
Arikiwai has given every satisfaction so far since being recommissioned a few weeks back, and had his first sprint to-day. It is confidently anticipated that this good galloper has overcome the trouble which has periodically manifested itself and retarded his racing to a large extent. The new bowling green at the Riccarton racecourse, adjoining the scraping sheds, is now an established fact and has been in constant uso for the past few weeks. Many of the trainers and riders have taken up the game and are receiving useful tuition at the hands of the more experienced members of the newlv-formed Riccarton Racecourse Bowling Club, The official opening of the club will take place next Saturday. . , Sea Gay, who won & race at the West Coast meetings last year, but who wo 3 later spelled, has been put into work again by fcer owner, Mr. B. Hampton, with a view to another trip over the hill for the forthcoming holiday fixtures.
