HIPO'S CUP SURPRISE.

TOTALISATOR DECREASE. Boautiful weather favoured the Te Kuiti Racing Club for the opening of its spring meeting at To Kumi on Saturday. There was a big attendance and the track was in first-class order.

Tho To Kuiti Cup was a splendid raoe, in which tho outsider Hipo defeated the favourite, Tho Swoll, in tho last few stridos. After tho race the gold cup accompanying tho stake, was presented to Mr. E. George, owner of Hipo, by Mr. W. Broadfoot, M.P. The favourites won threo races, but tho dofoat of Awarore in tho Stewards' Handicap, tho last race, made the day a rather bad one for followers of form.

An inquiry into interferonco suffered by Master Roley in tho To Kumi Handicap resulted in tho finding that it was accidental.

NOTES ON THE RACING.

SEVERAL SURPRISE WINS. Tuku and Coll found most favour in tho Maiden Handicap. Parfait Amour and Tuku hit tho front in turn over tho first furlong, but Joy Girl then drew out, being followed at tho top by Marechul, Tuku, Parfait Amour and Nassau Lady. Tho leaders held their positions at tho turn, and Joy Girl went on to win easily from Nassau Lady, with Coll a fair third and Parfait Amour, Marerhal and Tuku the next to finish. The winner was never troubled and is evidently fairly smart. Marechal showed speed, but failed to run on, Tuku and Parfait Amour failed, after having every chance.

Tho Lamb nnd Spulpiko wero tho only two seriously backed in tho Kopaki Hurdles. Tho Lamb and Red Day wero quickest to tho first fence, and they made most of tho running. Half a milo from home Tho Lamb, Red Day, Spalpiko and Mashonr, in close order, had tho raco to themselves, and so they entered tho straight. The Lamb having no trouble to boat Spalpiko. who finished on to get second, with Mashoor a fair third, followed by Rod Day, Gold Rep, Lucess Otranto. The Lamb outclassed tho. opposition, and will be hard to stop in a similar class oil Monday. Valuation and Cruachan wero well backed in a good betting raco on the Awnkino Hack Handicap. Valuation, Abbess and Patoro raced in a bunch along tho back from Day Guide, Cruachan and Te 'J'aono. Abboss was in front at tho top and, joined again by Valuation, alio led into tho straight, with Day Guido, Patera nnd To Taono handy. Valuation then cleared out and won impressively by nearly three lengths from Abbess, with Havilnnd a length away third, the next to finish being Ruby Dawn, Patere/Cruachan flnd Day Guide. The win-

ner is b clnssy hack, and will win in tnuch better company. Cruachan and To Taono were slightly unlucky in running, and soem the likeliest improvers. Good betting on tho To Kuiti Cup saw The Swoll, Lady's lioy and Lo Choucas at the head of quotations. Flying, Princo, Black Mairo and Lady's Boy raced past tho stand in company, Flying Princo being cloar at tho back from Black Mairo, with Hipo, Lady's Boy, Lo Choucas and The Swell following. The field was bunching at tho top, and at tho turn Black Mairo was just heading Flying Princo, Lady's Boy, Bipo and Lo Choucas, Lady's Boy and The Swell wero in charge near the post, tvhen Hipo dashed up on tho rails, to beat The Swell by half a length, with Lady's Boy a neck away third, followed by Le Choucafl, Maori Boy and Hakanoa. It was a fine race, with Hipo splendidly handled by W. H. Jones. Lady's Boy may have won but for losing a lot of ground going out of tho straight. Maori Boy was closer at tho finish than at any other stage. Tuku and Master Rowley headed an even pool in tho Te Kumi Hack Handicap. Unoco went out to make the pace from Always, Master Roley and Tuku, Half a mile from home Tuku went out clear, to load round the bend from Unoco and Glena Bay. The latter then put in a run and won in hollow fashion from Tuku, with Master Roley a poor third, and Mountain Guide, Always and Unoco nest. It was a poor field, and tho winner had a lot in hand. Only five started in tho Puketutu Handicap, Ti Tree being favourite at a nice price. Princo Lit and Macroom settled down in front from Clarus and Ti Tree, Macroom loading into tho straight from Ti Tree and Ohinemuri. Ti Tree soon Bettled Macroom and beat hor handily by a neck. Ohinemuri was a poor third, with the other pair well beaten. Ti Tree's winning margin would have been much greater had her rider desired.

Valstreet was a decided favourite for the Otorohanga Hack Handicap, with Big Bertha next in reauest. Valstreet, Royal Lover and Quinsilia raced in a bunch along the with Oscar and Big Bertha nest. Tho leading trio were still bunched entering the straight, where Oscar and Big Bertha wore leading the others. There were six in line at tho distanco, when Oscar came through on tho rails to win a fine race by a length from Valstreet, with Quinsilia a neck away third and Big Bertha, Princess Snow, Crown Arch and Royal Lover tho next to finish. Tho winner was well handled by apprentice R. Vincent. Valstreet was outside two horses all the way and seemed a little unlucky. Royal Lover showed speed, but failed to stay. Backers sorted out Awarero and Takutama aB tho likeliest of the five runners in the Stewards' Handicap. Town Bird was first to single out, Awarerd being slow to find his feet. At the top Town Bird put a break of six lengths on Billikins and'Tho Begum, • and ho was out by himself at the turn, with Takutama closing up in fourth place. Tho latter then finished fast, but he just failed to reach the tiring Town Bird, who won by a head. The Begum was two lengths away third, with Billikins and Awarero at intervals. Takutama had to run round two horses at tho distance, but for which he would havo won. Awarere gavo a wretched display, being always tailed off last.

REVIEW OF THE FIELDS. BY ARCHER. R tumors will bo numerous in tho Trial Handicap and luck in the early stages will be an important factor. Parfaifc Ainour, ■Nassau Lady, Coll, Asmodous, Tuku, Ding Dong and Bolle Star appear to be Iho likoly ones, as tbey aro better soasoned than somo of the others. Coll, Nassau Lady and Tuku may bo tho favourites.

In spite of his rise in weight, The Lamb, who scored v.ory easily on the first day, will probably bo a solid favourite for the Piopio Hurdles. His most serious opposition might come from Master Roley and Ned Kelly.

Tho Hangatiki Hack Handicap has attracted a useful field and may bo ft decent belting race. Abbess, Oscar and Valatrcofi raced prominently on tho first day, while To Taono nnd Cruachan are likely improvers. Valstreet, To Taone and Oscar mny bo in demand. Thoro is material for an interesting contest in tho Waitomo Handicap, moßt of tho candidates being capable of running nine furlongs solidly. Somo who may bo well supported aro Ti Tree. Black Mairo and Mnori Boy. Tho Maniapoto Hack Cup has attracted a field of 12. Tho topweights, _ Hakailoa and Unoco, are useful, while Luminary nnd Glena Bay aro recont winners. Pompeius is a possibility and Motere, who should beat all the light-weights, is well in. Motoro may bo favourito over Luminary and Hakanoa, Tho Mairoa Handicap bears an open aspect., as there is nothing outstanding in tho field, and mony of the candidates have not won for somo time.. Tnkutama, Macroom and Tho Begum may be tho ones to claim most attention. Tho class engaged in tho Rangitoto Hack Handicap is not strong and the ißsue is open. Some who may claim strong support aro Crown Arch, Always and Arohieleon. Some speedy beginners aro ongaged in tho Farewell Handicap and it should bo ono of the best betting races of the meeting. Leitrim is nicely placed and may bo favourite over Ridgemount and Lady's Boy.
