A JUMBLE SALE.
A jumble sale at the Y.W.C.A. yesterday evening was the cause of much emulation among prospective buyers, who waited patiently for the doors to open for many minutes beforehand. When they did, a surge of people swept into the hall and the stalls were immediately surrounded, their contents caught up, intently scrutinisid, and either borne off in triumph or indifferently' dropped back again on to the stall, rejected. There were a few men among the women, but they were very backward—almost timid—in their advances to the stalls compared with the women.
"Men's clothing, boots and hats go in no time," said one of the stallholders. "The demand is always keener for them than for anything else." Rows of boots and shoes, some that had seen very little wear, were swept upon the moment tho crowd entered, picked up, rolled over, examined, and somotimes tried on, but to do that meant relinquishing the chance for further adventures in boot wear. It seemed best to take the odds of their fitting, and often it was done. After all. Is 6d, 2s or 2s 6d for what was not infrequently a really good pair of shoes was quite worth taking a chance upon. And so, too. with hats and other goods. The prices were so modest and sometimes there was so little in tho purses with which to meet even those modest prices. In little more than half an hour, the stalls' were practicallv stripped, and tho hall empty but for the mora or less wearied stallholders. Jumble sales are strenuous pastimes!
