The Soul Ii Australian public have subscribed 35 per cent, of the .1500,000 loan for the Slate Bank of South Australia. The Common wealth Bank and some of the trading banks have underwritten the balance. The State Bank offered per cent, debentures at 99, free of Stale taxation. Allowing for redemption in 1942 the return on tlio issue price is £5 7s 3d per cent.
HARDENING OF STEEL. USE OF A NEW ALLOY. NEW YORK, Sept. 10. A motal alloy, called konel, to bo used for hardening steel, has been discovered by engineers of tho Westinghouse Company. While the new metal is red-hot, the test hammer bounces off it though tho hammer would crush sled,at tho same temperature. Its combination is conalt, nickel and ferrotitanium, and it is particularly useful as a substitute for platinum in radio tubes.

COLOMBO TEA SALES
Australian and N.Z. Press Association. (Received September 18, 7.:55 p.m.) COLOMBO, Sept. 17. There was no tea sale at Colombo last week. As a result 3,600,0001b. were offered to day. All grades woro in pood demand and "the market was strong. The quality was barely equal to that offered at tho previous sale. Next week's catalogues will approximate 2,200,0001b.

Tho annual Bale of pedigree Jersey bulls on behalf of the Franklin Jersey Breeders' Club concluded to-day, when 77 bulla wero offered and 75 wero sold. The top price was 42 guineas, which was realised for a two-year-old bull, Edgerley Garnet, offered by Mr. T. A. Millear, Woodlands, Tuakau. Ihe purchaser was Mr. A. B. Hall, of lurua. Several other bulls sold at over 30 guineas, and tho range of prices for tho remainder wns from fij guineas to 30 guineas . Tho average for tho 151 bulls Bold during the two days of tho sale was 18$ guineas. Tho Bnlc was conducted by Alfred Buck and and Sons. Limited, and the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency .Company, Limited.
