CHRISTCHURCH ACQUISITION
THE PRIZE-WINNING DESIGN.

CHRISTCHURCH. Tuesday
The winner of the competition for the design of the art gallery which is being presented to the' city by Mr. R. E. McDougall, is Mr. William Edward Armstrong, of Bedford Square, London. The second prize has been awarded to Mr. Alexander S. Reid, of Golders Green, London, and the third prize to Messrs. Gummer and Ford, of Auckland. This decision was announced last evening at a meeting of the City Council, after the members had inspected the three designs selected by the jury of award. The council Unanimously accepted the design as recommended by the jury of award. Each of the threo prize-winners will receive a premium of £IOO on condir tion that he prepares a detailed design. The assessor, Mr. S. Hurst Seagar, who solected the three finalists from the 40 competitors, said thero were many excellent designs, but there was none which could be recommended for adoption in its cntiroty. Regarding the winning design, ho said: "This gallery, with its effective lighting, and its skilful planning, will be a notable one among the galleries erected in modern times."
