ENLARGEMENT OF DOCK.
ALLOCATING THE COST.
THE COMING CONFERENCE.
The Auckland Harbour Board yesterday appointed a committee of three to confer with one proposed by the Government regarding the contribution to be made by the board toward the cost of enlarging the Calliope Dock. The Government committee, as announced by the Minister of Defence, the Hon. T. M. Wilford, some time ago, will consist of representatives of the Treasury, the Public Works Department and the Naval Service, and the Solicitor-General. The superintendent, in a report, detailing the Government's proposal, mentioned that in 1927, at the request of the then Prime Minister, Mr. Coatcs, the board had gone into the matter of enlarging the dock, and had made a confidential report, with certain financial recommendations.
Tlio chairman, Mr. M. H. Wynyard, moved that a committee be appointed, consisting of himself, the chairman of the Finance Committee, Mr. T. B. Clay, and Mr. 11. R. Mackenzie, ex-chairman of the board, to confer with the Government committee and report to the board in committee.
"I should like to bo on the committee. The matter affects my district," said Mr. E. Aldridge, immediately. Mr. Mackenzie: I think Mr. Aldridge is making a mistake. He is the Government- nominee, not the member for that district. If anyone else is appointed Mr. Greenslade should be.
Mr. Aldridge: But I am very keenly interested.
Mr. T. Bloodworth: Then I suggest that some of the city members should be appointed. The chairman said it was not advisable to have too largo a committee, since its members might have to travel to Wellington. Mr. Mackenzie and Mr. Clay were both specially fitted by past experience to handle the matter. In any event, nothing could be done until a report had been made to the board in' committee.
Sir. F. A. Ilellaby, in seconding the motion, said lie hoped that no parochial or sectional feeling would be allowed to intrude. The motion was carried.
