WOMEN'S INSTITUTES.

OPOTIKI. Tho monthly meeting of the above institute was held recently, the president, Mrs. Absolum, being in tho chair. Four new members were admitted. Tho competition, "A Musical Wedding, - arranged by Mrs. P. Black, and won by Mrs. J. T. Clark, was much enjoyed. Mr. P. R. Burton read an interesting and instructive paper on "Co-operation in Education,"- and later seized the opportunity of arousing tho interest of members in school matters. Mrs. Noble gave an interesting demonstration of stencilling, and enthused many members in this art. The roll call comprised "suggestions for future programmes," and resulted in many helpful ideas. Tho hostesses for the ovening wero Mrs. Anderson, Mrs. Stuart, and Misses White and Ferguson. WAINGARO. Tho monthly meeting of tho Waingaro Women's Institute was held at Mrs. Seavill's house, Mrs. Picken prosidiug. Mrs. Valder, of Hamilton, gave an interesting travel talk, and Misses Valder, Haywood and Leak gave musical items. A display of useful articles mado from sugar bags was given by tho members. Tho hostesses wero Mesdamcs Scavill and Brunskill. SWANSON. The general monthly mooting of the Swanson Women's Institute was held in tho local hall recently. Mrs. W. Taylor was in tho chair. After tho business of the meeting had been dealt with afternoon tea wa s dispensod, Mrs. Laurio and Miss Ficeman being tho hostesses. Tho sugar bag competition was a great success, Miss Gny _ boing the winner of tho prize. Her article made from a sugar bag was a carry-all kit, beautifully made and decorated. There wero numerous other nseful articles mado from sugar bags such as aprons, paper tidies, oven cloths, kettle holders, slip mat, kits, sand-shoe tidy, and the humble sugar bag was almost. unrecognisablo in tho serviceable articles made from it. Mrs. Buchanan was tho winner in tho most nseful household articlo competition. This proved to be a benzine case. WOODHILL. A meeting of tho Women's Institute was held in tho Woodhill Public Hall on Thursday,. Mrs. Stanley Phillips, tho convener, presiding. Mrs. D. Dorman, provincial president of the Women's Institutes, spoko on "The History of Women's Institutes" and the varied activities of the organisation. \fter a discussion on the matter it was decided to form a Women's Institute for tho, district, which would include Wharepapai and Rewiti. A committee "was elected with Mrs. Mac Donald as hon. • secretary, and Mrs. Stanley Phillips as president. ALBANY. A well-attended meeting of women of the Albanv district was held in the Memorial Library on Wednesday afternoon with the object of forming a branch of tho Women's Institute. Mrs. Irwin, ono of tho organisers of the institute, and Mrs. Blakeway, president of the Greenhitho branch, gavo interesting addresses on tho history of the movement and described its aims .and activities. It was unanimously decided to form a branch and the following were elected as an executive: —Mrs. Bruton, president, Mrs. Phillips, Mrs. Richards, Mrs. Schofield, Mrs. Mc'Clymont, Mrs. Collins, and Miss Totter, secretary. It, was decided to nominate a member of tho newly-formed branch as a candidate at the local School Committee election. Meetings will bo held on the first Wednesday of each month. The president and secretary wero appointed delegates to the conference to bo held in Auckland on April 36.
