AT GOVERNMENT HOUSE.

VICE-REGAL RECEPTION. The vagaries of the weather spare no ono and many plans have to ho changed at iho last moment owing to ils whims and caprices. So il was yesterday afternoon. when Their Excellencies tho Governor General and Lady .Alice Fergusson entertained a number of guests at Government House at what was to havo been a garden party. Instead, tho heavy showers of rain that continued to fall during the greater part of tho day mado this impossible and they wore received in the house. Through tho windows glimpses of green lawns and trees that seemed almost visibly to bo enjoying the downpour could bo caught, and toward tho end of the afternoon many of the guests mado their way out on to tho verandahs and enjoyed the cool freshness that was ils legacy. Their Excellencies received in tho largo reception room in which were to bo seen very beautiful chrysantheiriums in shades of mauve, yellow and creamy white, zinnias in gorgeous colourings, phlox, and other autumn flowers. In tho ballroom tea was served, and hero again were to bo seen bowls of chrysanthemums fronting the stand occupied by the orchestra and also arranged on tho tables. A delicate note of green was given bv hanging baskets of ferns overhead and linos of lycopodium, which were carried from sido to side of tho room.

Her Excellency wore a frock of carnation red georgette and ring velvet, made with a cape effect at the back and tho loose panels of tho skirt ending in points of ring velvet. Her black hat was banded with 131ack cire ribbon and finished with a diamante ornament. Countess Thelma Motaxa was in a frock of black georgette with a deep turnover collar of buttercup georgette and a black hat.
