MEN AND DOGS WORK HARD*
United Service. NEW YORK, Feb. 5. [By Mr. Russell Owen. Copyrighted IS2S by tho New York Times Company, and the St. Louie Post Dispatch. All rights for publication reserved throughout the world, "Wireless to the New York Times.] Qp WHALES> Feb _ s< The City of New York returned to the Bay to-day after a short trip to ayoid the ice. The work of unloading the material left on board of her by the Eleanor Boiling has been completed. All tho supplies left on the Barrier edge after the cliff broke and fell upon us has been safely hauled to the base.
In a few days wo will have ashoro a large house, gasoline and food. Twentyseven dogs hauled tho Ford aeroplane far back from the Barrier edge. All the dogs could have been put into the cabin of the plane. It was hard pulling, but the men aided the dogs, and in a few hours the Barrier trail was so smooth that even the top-heavy radio transmitter, which weighs 10001b., -was token in easily by one drive*»and seyen dogs.
The old trail over Bay ice is being used again, and as the ship is moored now to the old ice, which is several feet thick, ther<T is no chance of the men going in near the ship. Some of the cracks near the inlet on which our base is situated opened up recently. This i* because of the movement of the ice or of some unexplained pressure, but they can be bridged.
The weather to-day is perfect-' after, a, storm. The sun shines as warmly a3 oti a spring day, but when it is low in the sky it quickly becomes cold, and ice forms near the ship.
