LOSSES CAUSED BY LAKE
COURT AWARDS FARMERS £1489. [by telegraph.—own correspondent.] CAMBRIDGE, Saturday. Tho hearing was concluded this afternoon of the claim for £3407 mado against the Public Works Department by W. F. Woodward and J. F. McGechie, farmers, of Pukeatua, for compensation for submergence of land and road access and general losses • due to the formation of Arapuni Lake. Tho Court, over .which Mr. Justice Blair presided, awarded claimants £1489, each party to pay its own costs. Assessors' foes were fixed at £52 10s, each party to pay it 3 own assessor. In evidence for the department this morning it was contended that of 240 acres of claimants' land submerged 200 acres were worth about £1 10s an acre and the balance about 15s an acre. Another witness placed the value at £2 and £1 respectively, while a third said that when he visited the district six years ago it struck him as being the most derelict country he had ever seen. The construction of the Arapuni works and also new roads had enhanced the prospects of tho district.
