CAPTAIN COOK MEMORIAL.
TWO GUNS FROM ENGLAND. Among the charges in connection with the cost of conveying to Ship Cove the two guns and carriages of Cook's period presented by the Admiralty were an account of £4 4s 9d received by the Captain Cook Memorial Committee from the Railway Department for the handling of the guns at Picton, and an account of £6 8s 2d from the Department of Internal Affairs for the railage from Devonport to Albert Dock, England. As the guns were for the improvement of the monument, which is of a national character, requests were made that these charges should be remitted, and both departments agreed to withdraw the accounts. The guns were conveyed to Ship Cove a few days prior to the ceremony held there on October 27, in observance of the Cook bicentenary.
