Friday. The high-weight handicap events at Trentham in the past have been in the nature of graduation classes for really good gallopers, to name Mask and First Sight as the most recent. A run through the list at present does not suggest anything but the imported Tidal. Royal Lineage, Zeuxis and Cobham may be possible improvers. Tidal was not himself at Ellerslie, as he was suffering from a minor ailment, and if he has recovered by the time the local meeting comes round he may be a likely one of the party A careful consideration of the candidates in these events on the day is usually well repaid. The class engaged at the Foxton Club meeting is quite good for a country fixture. Night March has been left in the Foxton Cup, together with Toieuma, whose form at Ellerslie was very good. Teri, a winner at Tauherenikau, Kilmis3 and Discourse are light-weights who may run well, and Lady Limond may show something of her true form on her home track. Few horse 3 trained at Trentham have been -asked to gallop during the past few days, and it will be toward the end of the next week before matters brighten up. In point of fact, track work at Trentham prior to the Cup meeting is always of negligible quantity, for, as practically all the horses have been well raced over the holidays, they require only a few sprints. Many horses have them at home before arriving right on the eve of the meeting.
Southerners appear to be confident that Childsplay will play a prominent part in tho Wellington Stakes. The filly has escaped a penalty, and will carry 8.3. Honour will have 7.8, including his 10lb. penalty, and Ceremony 6.12. Childsplay last season showed herself one of the most brilliant gallopers seen out for a long time, and she should certainly test the juveniles of this year. She appears to be working well at Riccarton, and galloped well yesterday morning. However, Ceremony should be hard to beat at five furlongs with only 6.1'2 up. He is brilliant. Hynanna is reported to be working well, and evidently tho faces he had during the holidays have improved him. He may not be quite tuned up even for the "Wellington Cup, but he should be soon getting into the limelight again.
Miss Gowrie has been turned out for a long spell. Courageous is striding along in splendid stylo and is expected to obtain a share of the stake money at Trentham. Miss Ransom is well forward, and has been doing good work on tUe track. She should be in good form for the Wellington meeting. Thurnbell has put up some fast times recently on the training track, and has only to repeat them to get some of the stake money at Trentham. Mr. Kembail has brought into his stables at Masterton from the stud farm a dozen two-year-olds. W. Hawthorne is to take them in hand. Some of the youngsters are said to look above the average. FORTHCOMING MEETINGS. TE AROHA JOCKEY CLUB. The To Aioha Jockey Club will hold its annual raco meeting on Saturday and Monday, February 16 and 18.
