NEW SOUTH WALES.

GOVERNMENT'S POSITION

LABOUR SEES OPPORTUNITY. (Received December 15, 12.25 a.m.) SYDNEY. Dec. li. Officials of the Australian Labour Party believe that an early election may result from the efforts of the New South Wales Parliament to pass certain legislation. They have thereforo issued a warning to Labour members that they must attend all sittings of Parliament. Union officials say tho Government may be defeated on a snap vote if this be done. Tho income tax measure on which the Government was defeated yesterday in the Legislative Assembly provided for the imposition for the current year of a supertax of 3d in the pound on companies, the revenue from that source to be applied to a reduction of taxation 011 certain individual incomes.

The defeat was purely an accident. The samo tiling occurred on the previous night by means of a snap vote. Mr. Bavin on each occasion rallied his forces and recommitted the defeated clauses, which were agreed to, the Opposition thus being outwitted.

There is a great outcry against this extra taxation of companies. Critics contend that it will drive capital to other States.
