Fifty villages aro partly under water. Dykes burst so rapidly in many places that the villagers had only just time to save their lives. Roads and railways have been cut in somo districts, resulting in Brussels and Antwerp being without milk or vegetables. Shipyards, metal-works, and brickyards along tho River Scheldt have been badly damaged. Many houses collapsed. Tho gale caused considerable damage along the entire coast of Belgium. The total damage runs into many millions of francs. The Government has created an emergency relief fund.
