LEAGUE OF PENWOMEN.
An interesting and very enjoyable evening of orchestral items and original compositions, performed by members of the music section of the League of New Zealand Penwomen, was held in the clubroom on Tuesday. The convener, Miss G. A. Bertram, Mus. Bac., who recently rereturned from a tour of Australia and the Islands, presided. The Penwomen's Orchestra, comprising Miss Amy Stevenson, Mrs. Hesketh, Misses Phillips, Sbelmerdine, Orr, Halpin, Tiarks, Braeme and Satchwell, gave most musicianly renderings of the following items:—"Suite Rococo/' Borowski; "Benedictus," Mackenzie; "Evening in the Forest," Roger Quilter; "Nocturne,' Mendelssohn Suite," Adam Carse.
Miss Etta Field gave a most, sympathetic interpretation of Mrs. Osborne's compositions, " Weep Not the Splendid Tears" and " Sensitive," the accompaniments of which were played by the composer. Mrs. Osborne's pianoforte compositions, " Impromptu" and " Scherzo Waltz" were most enjoyable. Miss Amy Hansard's interpretation of " Nod," a song composed by herself, and " Here ' Where the World is Quiet," composed by Miss Reneo Satchwell, were much appreciated. Miss Satchwell played delightfully two solos " Lullaby" and " Dreaming." " Kotiro roi," written and composed by Mrs. Harold King, was interpreted in true Maori fashion by the composer, and "Nocturne," Miss Theo. Halpin's pianoforte composition, received well-merited applause.
