TE KUITI MEETING.

NOTES ON THE FORM.

BY ARCHER.

All things considered the To Kuili Racing Club's Meeting passed off quito successfully, although thero was a decrease of X2GOO in Iho totalisator investments compared with the amount handled at Iho last meeting held 011 the course two seasons ago. Excopt in a conplo of instances the fields were of reasonable proportions and thero was some interesting racing. Five favourites wero successful in tho 16 events and most of the other winners were well backed, with the exception of Ramblin' Kid, who effected a big surprise in the Piopio Hurdles. One (ho disappointments of tho meeting was Stormy, whose two failures in th» hurdlo events wero costly to his admirers. Ridden by an inexperienced rider. Stormy carried the confidence of his connections on tho first day, but wus never in the picture and could only finish a moderate sixth. On the second day he. was ridden by S. Henderson, but went out sore, and failed to do uny better. His form was too bad to bo true, and possibly 110 needs a little rest to freshen up. Stormy demonstrated in his first start over hurdles that ho ia tho makings of a capable hurdler and he will come later 011.

Tho class of hurdlers seen out at the meeting was weak and few of tho runners aro likely to improve to uny extent. Star of tho East showed tho best form and he is useful whero tho company is not strong. Lady Spalpeen notched two seconds and went well enough to suggest that she will gel a winning turn at one of tho country meetings shortly. Of tho others, Highflown, Tarrapecn and Archecn may bo the most likely to do better in the near future and a little experience may also benefit Abbott's Delight, who was prominent for a stage on tho opening day. After a number of unplaced performances Transformer showed a returji to form in winning tho To Kuili Cup. For most of the journey ho was in a rearward position and was forced to come 011 the outside when the field bunched, but he finished well, and scored decisively. Now that ho has returned to the winning list Transformer can be expected to display further good form, and he may provo one of the hardest to beat ill the Alison Cup oil Friday, Ho has previously laced well at Takapuna and is nicely in with 7.0.

Mervetlo was turned out in great order by A. Tinker and oho made amends for some previous disappointments by winning three races in 113 many starts. On the. second day she recorded a rather unusual performance in accounting for both the leading handicap and tho open sprint. Mervetto won in good stylo on each cccasion and tliero is no reason why sho should not go on and show even better form. Her successes wero very popular, as her owner, Mr. J. Fraser Smith, has been out of luck with his hor3es for somo time.

On the strength of his good track work Monetizo was heavily backed in liis two starts and his failures were expensive to his supporters. On tho opening day ho ran a fair fourth, but on tho second day ho was never sighted. Monetize displays line speed on tho tracks, but it has been lacking in his races, and ho will have to improve considerably on his latest effort to reach the winning list. As ho is only a three-year-old ho has yet time to make a lot of progress and possibly he may become more solid later on.

TIIE TAKAPUNA MEETING. GOOD FIELDS ENGAGED. The character of the acceptances received for events which form tho programme on the first day of the. Takapnna Jockey Club's Spring Meeting may bo taken to augur well for tho complete success of the gathering at tho North Shore fixed for next Friday and Saturday, in the event of fine weather. The recent rains have freshened up the scene to a remarkable degree, nnd tho race track lias never previously been seen to better advantage than at tho present time. Palmares, Welcome Home. Mussie. Double Mint, Lucklaino nnd Red Lion were yesterday withdrawn from tho Takapuna Plate, and with tho list, now reduced to 'it, that obviates tho necessity of dividing tho field, which i* now composed a3 follows:

Seatown nnd Son Star nro expected to arrive this moruintr.

WANGANW NOTES. THE CUP DISTANCE. [ntoM Ot'R OWN CORRESPONDENT. ] WANGANUI, Tuesday. There is some talk of reducing the distnnco of the Wangnnui Cup, which tins been ono mile and three-quarters since ISBB, prior to which it was at first two miles and nqunrtor and then two inile3. The proposal to reduce the distanco of the cup to a mile and a-half will not meet with approval in all quarters, as there nro some who favour tho longer distance being retained in view of tho fact that it is tho only handicap event in the Dominion run over a mile and three-quarters. There aro plenty of mile nnd fi-hulf races now, nnd form over that distanco can be fairly well judged, but the extra quarter of a milo makes it harder to pick tho winner at Wnnganui of tho big event. Episode has had to bo spelled again, the soreness which affected her as tho result of being knocked while contesting tho Great Northern Guineas at Ellerslio last month having mndo its reappearance. The filly was lamo for a month on returning from Auckland, but then seemed to be all right and showed no signs of soreness when given pace work, but when sent along a bit fast she went lame again and sho will havo to be given another spell. Early in tho season sho looked certain to win somo good races again this year, but was put back with a cold and then soreness developed, so that sho hns been particularly unfortunate. It may bo regarded ns pretty certain that Episode will not raco again until the autumn season comes round.

The Warden figures iiniong those left in the Great Northern Derby, and, nil going well, (ho Australian-bred gelding will fulfil his engagement in the classic event at Kllerslie. Ho will probably bo a runnpr n,t Feilding next Friday. Tho Verdcrer geldis looking very well. Lysander lias been kept at short sprinting work sinco racing at Trent ham. Ho is looking in great heart and hitting out freely. Ho should bo ready lo run a fast fivo furlongs in llio Stakes at Feilding, but, from all accounts, will have to bo at his best to beat Pagnnclli. It should bo a good race. Bright Glow and Silveiinitio nro being allowed to tal.o tilings easily at Hawern. but both appear to bo in great heart und ready lo resume fast work at any time. Vivo continue# to gallop well on the tracks at llawera ami she is apparently back to form, which means that she will bo very hind to bent at Feilding in her engagements.

There will not be ninny Wangaimi horses competing at FeildiliK on Friday and Saturday next, bill some of tho slake money should conio this way.

Ceremony should run well iu the Nursery Hnndicap at 1-Vilding next Saturday. « Limosn litis gono amiss again and sho is not likely to race for somo time.
