TE RAUPARAHA.
Sir,—"WiremuV article, "I'o llau- ~ paraha," in Saturday's Supplement, while 5 in the main correct, omits the true reason of the Wairau massacre, which, as To . Rauparaha told father in my presence in after years, was this:—"There would . have been no killing, but while we were arguing about rohe (boundaries), the I pakeha stood in file opposite us with their guns at their shoulders. Suddenly 3 in the midst of our talk one of their L guns exploded, and my nephew Te i Rangihaeata's first wife, stooping to ar- - range the stones of her hajngi (oven) was shot dead through the breast. This f unprovoked deed so enraged me that I \ cried: 'Patua! lvia ngaro mete puehu s l piua ana e te hau !' (kill them that they • disappear as the -tlust that is blown by i the wind). Else all had ended in talk." ! In restating affairs of the past an essen- ■ tial to worth is that all main facts be • included. W.B. | Otorchanga.
