SUCCESS OF AUCKLANDER.
MR. E. E. BAILEY CHOSEN. OTHER CANDIDATE FROM OTAGO. [BY TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] WELLINGTON, Thursday. Tho Rhodes Scholarship Committee met this morning at Government House. Five candidates presented themselves, and thn scholars elected for 1929 arc Mr. E. E. Bailey, LL.B., of Auckland University College. * Mr. W. E. Henley, of tho University of Otago. Mr. Bailey proposes to pursue his studies in law and Mr. Henley his study of medicine.
■ Mr. Bailey, who was also nominated last year: .a 21 years of age. Ho is H solicitor employed by Messrs. lutchett, Rees and Luxford. Ho wag born in Auckland, and while attending the Otahuhu Convent School obtained a scholarship at tho Sacred Heart College, where he remained until tho end of 1923, winning a number of distinctions, including a junior national scholarship in 1920. In 1922 ho was dux of the school, winning a senior national sqholarship tho same year. Ho was'again dux in 1923 and won a university national scholarship that year at tho ago of 16. After spending 1924 as a full-time student at tho Auckland University College Mr. Bailey became a law clerk and qualified as a solicitor at the age of 19. Ho obtained his LL.B. last year, and expects to complete his LL.M. degree this year. » Mr. Bailey played lock in tho unfversity football team that visited Suva ill 1926, and also accompanied tho college team which went to the Islands this year. In 1927 he played for the university senfor B teum until "temporarily injured. Ho is a good tennis player and has had experience in rowing, swimming and yacht ing. It is Mr. Bailey's intention to enter upon an advanced study of'law while id England, and he will return to New Zenland on concluding his course with a view to taking up an academic position in one of the university colleges. Mr. Henley is 21 and is in his second year as a medical student. Ho was for two years at Napier High School and in 1923 went to Wanganui College. He passed matriculation and won a Senior National Scholarship, lirom \Vanganui lie won a university entrance scholarship. He was head of the school and won many prizes. He has tfiken first classes in hi? university examinations. At school he was in the cricket and football teams and at tho university he has played tennip and Rugby and is on various students' committees.
