HAT MANUFACTURERS.

Sir, —The letter of 14th insl., signed "Hat Manufacturer," states tho case exactly as we have experienced it. The statement made by Mr. R. Hirch is practically correct in one particular instance that I have met, and is a sample of anomalies that can occur in the tariff in any line of business. Speaking generally our firm have been well treated by the Customs Department and Government, and considering the large number oi new varieties of materials which we have had to use during the last two years particularly. we are more than satisfied with our treatment by the Customs Department. In a large number of instances where our goods have been held up for decision from Wellington we have met with a finding in our favour invariably. C. B. Plummer. Rutland Street, Auckland.
