CHINESE WIFE KILLED.

(.'hung i Miao, a Chinese law student, was sentenced to death to-day at Carlisle for strangling his Chinese wife at Borrowdale during their honeymoon in the lake district on June 19. Accused heatedly protested his innocence after sentence had been passed, but Mr. Justice Humphreys intimated that ho believed the verdict was right. Miao was art extremely clever man always ready with an answer.

For the defence it was suggested that two Easterners, either Chinese or Japanese, had murdered the woman for the. jewels she carried, which were worth .113000. She was the daughter of a Chinese millionaire.

The Crown, however, showed that no Orientals, other than accused, had been within three, miles of the scene of the murder.

Late on tho night of June 19, a voting Chineso woman, who had been staying with her husband at a boardiiighouso at Grange, in Borrowdale, was found dead, apparently strangled, on a grassy knoll just off the main Borrowdale road near Derwentwatcr. The woman appeared to have been strangled with a window-blind cord, which was twisted and knotted four times round her neck so tightly that it was cutting into the flesh. The body seemed to have slipped from the rocky top of the knoll down into a natural rock garden of ferns and heather. Early next morning Inspector Graham and Constables Scott and Mounsey arrested the woman's husband, Chung i Miao. aged 28, who described himself as a doctor of Hongkong. He was taken in his bedroom :it Borrowdale Gates, a boardiiighouso kept by Miss Crossley. at Grange. Chung Yi Miao was brought up at the Keswick Police Court charged with murder. Miao. who was said to be a law student of New York, said, in broken English that ho wanted his wife's relatives and friends, Ins brother from Portugal, and h:s own relatives and friends at the trial so as to satisfy both sides. He had a grandfather and grandmother in Hongkong, and friends in New York, but none in England.
