NOTES ON THE RACING.

PRODI OE'B CONSISTENCY* UNIQUE STEEPLECHASE FINISH. Potoanui wftß roost fancied for the Trial Hurdles, tho opening event, through there was good fiupport for both Kawini and Kiaosi. Harbour View led Siaosi over the first hurdle and at tlio stand the pair were together. followed by Tinopono. Potoanui, Piot, Farndcn and Quincoraa. Siaosi showed the way alone the back from Potoanui, Tinopono, Harbour View, Piet, Quincoma and Farndcn. Quincoma, Piet and Potoanui toeether closed on the leader round the top. but Siaosi out-jumped them and led into tho straight from Piet, who was closely attended by Potoanui. Quincoma and Tinouono. Siaosi jumped tho last hurdle nicely and ran in an easy winner pulling tin bv half-a-length from Potoanui Piet was three lengths awair. followed by Tinopono, Kawini. Quincoma. Llewellyn and Harbour View. Episode woa made r, strong favourite for the three-yoar-old classic, the Great Northern Guineaii. There were only a few tickets between Toxeuma and Prodice, the second and third favourites, and then Stag-, hunter and White Wings were almosi eaually backed. Cashier and Toxeuma began auickest. ' Toxeuma liai taken charge at the six furlong Dost, followed by Avoncourt. Staghunter, White Wings, Gold Money and Te Atiawa. Episode went to tho front rounding the top. with White Wings and Gold Money together behind her. Toxeuma just headed Te Atiawa and Grand Tea, who were racing in lino. Toxeuma. Gold Money and White Wingrs turned for home practically on terms. with Episode, Staghunter. Prodice and Cashier following. Prodice showed too much speed for her rivals in the straight, and she ran homo an easy winner by a length and a-half from Toxeuma. who was unlucky rounding tho tend in getting a bump. C-ashier was half a length away, and then came Episode, "White Wings. Mithra, who rail very wide at tho turn, and Sir Russell. Prodice's win. following her success at Avondale. showed her to bo a consistent performer. Sectional Times. Tho sectional times were: "us furlong, 13 3-ss; two furlongs. 25 . l-ss: three furlongs. 36 ;i-ss: four furlongs, 48 3-ss: five furlongis, J .3; inile, 1.10 1-5. Aussie was backed as a certainty in tho Shorts Handicap, no doubt on tho strength of his good track work during tho week, raganelli was second choice, with good backing for Benzora and Nancy Lee. Commendation would not face tho barrier and was left when the field was despatched. Ballymoy 11. and Aussie werq first away, but they both faded out quickly. Oration and Paganelli were together at tho bend, followed fcy Freehold, Lady' 3 Boy. Kaiti and Benzora. The first two turned into the straight in line, closely attended by Lady's Boy. Benzara. Lysander and Kaiti. Oration finished on strongly to beat Paganelli by two lengths. Benzora was a length and ahalf away, followed by Prince Otto, Lysander. Kniti and Lady's Boy. The winner was one of the outsiders and paid a handsome dividend. He clearly showed his Avondale form 011 a wet track was all wrong. An inquiry was opened into tho running of Aussie, who got away well and then appeared to be knocked back. He mado another run round the bend, but received a, further bump. After evidence was heard the inquiry was adjourned until to-day. Principal Race Spoiled. The principal raco of the day. the Mitchelson Cup, was entirely spoiled by the fact that seven horses were left at tho post; their riders apparently being under the impression it was a false start. The horses left were Star Stranger, third favourite. Catkin, fifth favourite. Mint Leaf, Tidal, Te Kara, Sir Archie and Valkon. Tho others went ahead, -Transformer leading past tho. stand from Papatu. Desert Glow. Laughing Prince. Mask. Royal Mint and Queen Arch. The order was much the same along tho back, except that Queen Arch had run into fourth place. Desert Glow led Laughine Prince into the straight with Papatu. Transformer and Mask following. Laughing Prince ran in an easy winner from Desert Glow, who was nearly the same distance in front of Mask, after whom camo Royal Mint. Papatu, Queen Arch and Transformer. There wan an angry demonstration hy the public as the horses returned to tho birdcage. After a considerable delay the horses went round on the outside to the starting point for the Hunters' Steeplechase, for which Pompeiuo was the popular fancy. The topweight, Importer, was second choice, this pair dominating the betting, as thero was a -big drop to Master Arch, the third favourite. Master Arch and Archangel fell at the first fence. Tago San led up the hill from Clockwork. Marita. Masboor. Roman Abbey and Rafferty. Tago San and Roman Abbey fell at tho first fenco on the hill, the former breaking a leg, necessitating his destruction. Mashoor was■ in command at the stand double, followed by Marita, Pompeius, Clockwork and Raflerty. Mashoor was ten leDijths clear of the field along the back, and he led up the hill from Rafferty. Pompeiua, Marita and Importer, all four of whom camo to grief at the first fence. Mashoor had a commanding lead entering the straight and hu ran' home an easy winner by twenty lengths from Cui Bono, who was twelve lengths ahead of ClocKwori. Syndicate was tho only other to finish. The jockeys had to charge their mounts through the crowd to get to the finishing pest. The winner was the rank outsider of the field and "paid a dividend of well over hall'-a-century. while the second horse paid double figures TO-DAY'S EVENTS. The three remaining events on the first day's programmo postponed from Saturday will bo run to-day; when admission to the course will be free With regard to investments mado on the totalisator in connection with the Welcome Stakes, it is announced that such have been cancelled, and that a refund of money invested on that race will be madei on presentation of tickets at the totalisator houso to-day. BY MENTOR. A small field will contest the Welcome Stakes. Supremacy won in a walk at Avondale and sprinted in fine style on Friday, although not asked for his best. Hunting Day. Clover and First Money are all speedv youngsters, but nothing Bhould challenge Supremacy's position at the head of quotations. Hunting Day and Clever may follow him in the betting.

A field of 24 will give backers some food for thought in summing up the Gordon Handicap prospects. Storm Fiend and Arikitoa each caught the judge's eye twice at Avondale, so that their form is good. Arikitoa is an improving gelding and a likely stayer. Modost Boy and Royal Lineago have been working very nicely at Ellerslie, while others with some pretensions to form aro War Officer. Luminary, Eager Rose, Kerry Dance. Metellus and Sports King. Any one of half a dozen may b« favourite, but good support should be accorded Royal Lineage. War Officer and Arikitoa. Another good field of sprinters is engaged in the Flying Handicap. Early in the season many must be judged on last season's form and latest track work. Recent winners are High Pitch, Thursby and Flying Juliet, the first-named pair being notable for ability to handle soft ground. Awarero is a topnotch sprinter who has galloped very well, but he may still need a race. Light-weights gonerally race well in this event, and likely ones among tho lower division are Ohinoniuri. Goshawk. Hyde Park. Royal Doulton, Tinakoa nnd The Fox. In anothor great betting race Tho Fox, Ohinemuri and Goshawk may bo in demand. CONCLUDING DAY'S RACES. The second and concluding day's races of tho Auckland Spring Meeting will be held to-morrow (Tuesday) Tho weights for the eight events which form tho programme will bo declared by Mr. F. J. McManenun at 7 o'clock to-night, and acceptances for sarno close at 9 o'clock. THE CARTERTON RACES. HOROMEA ANNEXES THE CUP. SPRINT EVENT TO CALLANMORE. END OF PROMISING FILLY. BRILLIANT GALLOP BY STATELY. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN COP RESPONDENT. ] CHRISTCHURCH, Saturday. Training operations at Riccarton this morning were marred by -an unfortunate accident, ending in the death of the three-year-old filly Quaecee. She had just completed a six-furlong gallop in 1.13 3-5, tho best performance of the morning, and when passing the winning post she faltered. An examination revealed that a log was broken below the fetlock joint and she had to bo destroyed. Quaecee was one of tho most promising young horses at Riccarton, where she h.vl been responsible for somo good work during the past few weeks. She had had only one race, having acted as runnerup to First Raid at Ashburton last month. She was by Paladin from Disdainful and wna bred by her owner-trainer, G. Murray Aynsley, who assessed her valuo at a high figure when approached recently by a prospective purchaser. The two-year-old filly Stately showed brilliant speed this morning by sprinting half a mile in 47 3-ss. She is going to bo hard to beat in tho McLean Stakes. Martarma showed signs of trouble in ono of his legs a few days ago and it is practically certain that ' his racing days aro over. He has not broken down, but rather than tako that risk ho will bo retired to the stud. Most of the Riccarton horses with engagements at tho Dunedin meeting will leave for the south to-morrow night, while the balance will go on Tuesday. The contingent from this end will number 22, representing nine stables. H. Cutts will tako Childsplay, Prickles, Quarter Deck and Impertinence; CI. Murray-Aynsley, I'ootfall, Paperchase, Starshooter and Stately: T. H. Gillett, Count Cavour. Money Order and Amor; G. J. Pine. Silver.Coot, Noteworthy and Amourette R. Longley. Proud Knight and Amorist; W Stone, Silver Paper and Aspiring; P. V. Mason, Goblin Market and Jaleux; J. Boyd, Front Rank; R. Ellis, Diana's Lad. Somo of theso horses aro not at their best yet, but there should be some winners. Tho Auckland trainer, J. T. Jamicson, has several horses in important events at Riccarton, for which nominations closed on Friday. Prince Humphrey is in tho Canterbury Cup and Stead Cup, while In the Shade, Mithra and Le Choucas aro in somo of the handicaps. The first acceptance for tho New Zealand Cup resulted in the defection of 24 horses, but there wore no surprises. Those left in include the nine horses at tho head of tho list, Star Stranger, Count Cavour,. Rapier. Beacon Light. Footfall, Set Sai , Pink Note. Battle Colours and Bisox. These provido the basis for a .first-class field. . Commendation has been freely nominated for engagements at the Canterbury Jockey Club's meeting. With tho befit horses in the Dominion engaged tho prospects lor tho November carnival aro very bright.. It is reported from Dunedin that T.. Green will ride Pink Note in tho New Zealand Cup. He is going south to pilot tho Paper Money gelding in hia engagements at Wingatui next woek.
