REGISTRATION OF ELECTORS.
Sir —From the statement by tho Register of Electors appearing in Saturday s Herald, it is evident that tho system of compulsory registration has failed to ncliicvo its objective. The fact that 20>0(JO additional names have gone in for the 10 Auckland electorates since the rolls closed three months ago, proves this. Any hope of a fairly complete roil will have to depend, as usual, on the active work of outsido organisations, not on the passive attitude of the department. Yet, although a very large percentage of tho 20,000 additional registrations are undoubtedly due to these outside workers, the effect of the registrar's statements will bo to discourage them and to cause electors to adopt an attitude of passive resistance or hostility to canvassers. If the department reallv wants a complete roll, the least it can ilo is to assist the canvassers and riot impede them, even, if the result means more work for it and a demonstration of the failure of the compulsory registration provisions.
