THE ELLERSLIE EPISODE.
Sir, —Whether by land or by sea, a catastrophe must be met by instant action if any good is to be accomplished to those likely to suffer. That the authorities at Ellerslie failed to act in satisfaction to the thousands concerned in the Mitchelson Cup on Saturday is more than deplorable. Only seven out of fourteen horses took part in ■ the race. the simplest plan would have been to allow the other seven horses to race, awarding two, or even four, dividends, thp cup to go to thf horse doing the best time. Nothing was done in justice to tho immense crowd holding tickets on prospective winners, and as ali classes of tho community were interested there is no wonder that investors made a hostile demonstration. The attitude of the authorities calls for more than ordinary comment and may cause a tremendous setback to the popularity of the Ellerslie course. J* Cotter.
