BETTING ON RACES.

LARGE SUM INVOLVED. AUGKLAND PROVINCE RETURN TOTAL NOW EXCEEDS £2,500,000. SEASON NOT YET COMPLETED. The sum of £2,581,544 10s has already been put through the totalisator this season by supporters of racing and trotting in Auckland Province. The Auckland Trotting Club's winter meeting is yet to be held, and another fixture still befoie racegoers in the current season is that of the To Kuiti Club, which this year will race at Elleislie. As the figures now stand, they are only £478 10s behind those for 1926 27. When compared with the season of 1925-26, the progress total is lower by £383.027 10s, and, carried back to 1924-25. it is down by £227,503. Racing, with £1,982,677, has accounted for tho greater part of the season's investments, and of this amount the city clubs' meetings produced £1,313,925. In the previous year the city clubs accounted for £1,254,728, a total which shows this season to have the advantage by £59,196 10s. However, on the figures for 1925-26. the metrooolitan clubs' investments are down by £78,671 10s. The popularity of Ellerslie is revealed in the fact that at the four meetings conducted by the Auckland Racing Club this season, £911,613 10s was put through the totalisator, the total being an increase of £63,163 on that for the previous season, and a decrease of £38,074 10s on 1925-26. The country racing clubs have also had the experience of larger investments this season. Their total to date is £668,752, an increase of £62,994 on 1926-27, but a decrease of £67,342 on 1925-26. The following tablo shows in detail the investments at the racing and trotting meetings which have been held so far this season, tho figures for the two previous seasons being given for purposes of comparison : RACING.
