NORTH ISLAND CONTESTS. GATHERING AT TE AROHA. __ THE OPENING DAY'S PLAY* [BX TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] TE AROHA. Saturday. The North Island lawn tennis championships were commenced at Te Aroha to-day in ideal weather on the To Aroha club's new courts at Herrieaviile. A number of well-known players from Wellington, Mas* iterton, Wsnganui, Hamilton, Rotorua, King Country jmd Auckland are competing. There :is a big sntry for a handicap tournament, which occupied the major part of the day. In the championship games a fair standard was maintained. Most intfercst was centred in the doubles contest between Thomson and Thomson (Auckland) and Dr. J, T. Laurenson and Ward (Matamata), which resulted in a meritorious win for the Auckland pair, 7—5, 3 —6, 6 —3. Laurenson failed to strike form in the first set and was frequently passed at the net by the younger Thomson, who dominated the game throughout and was the beat of the four. His volleying was crisp and he brought off many brilliant smashes. The matches will be continued on Monday and the finals will be played on Tuesday. This evening the visiting players were the guests of Dr. E. R. Laurence, president of the Te Aroha Club, at an entertainment, and .will be motored to Arapuni to-morrow by local residents.
