HOLY NAME SOCIETY.
FIRST DOMINION RALLY. SERVICE IN ST. BENEDICT'S. Members of the Holy Name Society, representing branches in city and suburban Catholic parishes, filled St. Benedict's Church last evening. Advantage had been taken of the presence in Auckland of the Very Rev. Father Powell, O P., the Superior-General of the Dominican Order in Australia, to hold the first rally in the Dominion of the men of the society, which is under the patronage of his Order. Barely twelve months ago, the first branch was formed here; in other parts of the world the membership is counted ill tens of thousands, and in the United States alone there are nearly a million members. The objects of the society are the maintenance and increase of men's faith in the Divinity of the Saviour, to promote respect and honour for His Holy Isame, and to encourage respect r for authority, civil and religious. Father Powell - preached an . eloauent and impressive sermon on " The Holy Name Man as a witness to the Divinity of Christ." At its conclusion, the* large congregation renewed the Holy Name Society pledge which includes the following secular articles: "I pledge myself against perjury, blasphemy, profanity and obscene speech. I pledge my loyalty to the flag of my country, and to the God-given principles of freedom, justice and happiness for which it stands. I pledge mv support to all lawful authority, both civil and religions." Benediction was given bv Dr. Liston. Coadjutor Bishop of Auckland, and all the parish priests of the city and suburbs attended.
