FUND FOR PALESTINE.
RELIEF FOR UNEMPLOYED. GIFTS BY BRITISH JEWS. (British Official Wireless.) (Received December 30. 7.5 p.m.) A. and N.Z. RUGBY. Dec. 29. Sir Alfred Mond, M.P., is raising a fund of £20,000 for the relief of tho unemployed in Palestine. Mr. Bernhard Baron, the millionaire tobacco magnate, has subscribed £SOOO toward tho fund. A substantial sum has already been transmitted to Palestine by Sir Alfied, who has himself contributed £IOOO to the fund.
Mr. Bernhard Baron is by birth a Russian Jew. He invented a cig:>rettemaking machine, which he sold for £120,000, and bought and built up the tobacco business of Carreras, Limited. In 1925 he gave over £200,000, mainly to London hospitals, and he yearly makes large charitable donations. He has given £BO,OOO to the Zionist movement. In 1926 the £1 shares in Carreras were quoted' at £l7.
