OWNERSHIP OF ISLANDS
CLAIM MADE BY MAORI. THE POOR KNIGHTS GROUP. early' massacre recalled. [BY TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] WHANGAREI. Thursday. A memorable episode in Maori history was recalled at the sitting of the Tokerau Native Land Court at Whangarei to-day when Pouaka Wehiwehi, of Whangaruru, claimed possession of the Poor Knights Islands. Claimant says he is the last lineal descendant of the former chief of the Ngatiwai tribe who was the sole survivor of the massacre at the islands abonfc the year 1822. An expedition from Hokianga rounded North Cape, intent on battle with some of the Bay of Plenty tribes and on their way landed pi the Poor Knights with disastrous results to the inhabitants. Pouaka is owner of land at Whangaruru. and at Matarau. His illiteracy was explained by the fact that his aged grandmother, Hana Paingatai, who is still alive and has some reputation as a " wise woman," prevented him as a child from associating with children of inferior rank so that he never went to school. The sitting will be continued to-morrow.
