RESEARCH CONFERENCE

AGRICULTURE IN EMPIRE. REPORTS OF COMMITTEES. (Received October 27, 10.35 p.m.) A. and Is.Z.-Sun. LONDON, Oct. 26. The Imperial Agricultural Conference finally approved of many of tHe committees' reports. The Subtropical Research Committee reported that the CommonWealth is spending £50,000 on a research station in North Queensland. The annual expenditure of £IO,OOO is being shared equally by the Empire Marketing Board and the Commonwealth. It suggested that the station should act as a centre of research into the animal industry. The report on nutrition in tha Tropics and problems of pasture was adopted The Information Committee recommended a series of bureaux for correspondence centres, to cost £20,000 a year, subject to supervision by a body representing Canada, Australia, South Africa, New Zealand, India, the Irish Free State and Britain.

The Chief Scientific Adviser to the Ministry of Agriculture, Sir Daniel Hall, objected to the allocation of the money for bureaux. He said it would be better devoted to research. The Australian delegate, Mr. Julius, vigorously defended the recommendation, and said it was essential and would be contributory to reSearch. Mr. Grisdale, a Canadian delegate, said that unless the bureaux were established it was doubtful if Canada would co-operate. The conference adopted the report.
