BRITAIN PREDOMINANT. OIL FUEL REPLACING COAL. (British Official Wireless.) (Received October 27, 6.12 jj.m.) A. and N.Z. RUGBY, Oct. 26. Ihe annual report of Lloyd's Register of Shipping shows that of the total of the merchant vessels holding the classification of Lloyd's Register, which at the end of last June had a total tonnage of 29,528.000 tons, more than half were British owned, and 66.1 per cent, of last year's projected new tonnage was for construction in the shipyards of Britain and Ireland.
The tendency for the replacement of coal by oil fuel is further illustrated by the report, which shows that of the new tonnage constructed last year 69.2 per cent, were built for oil burning, whereas Bix years ago the percentage was 33.8. These figures apply only to new construction. Of the vessels at present afloat 64 per cent, are coal driven, and. it does not necessarily follow that any vessels having oil fuel installations will never use coal. Of the oil-driven vessels afloat, 2500 are motor-ships, of which, however, most &re vessels of under 1000 tons register, feotor-ships of over 6000 tons number 141, and there are 88 motor-ships each of {TO* 8000 tons register.
