NOTES FROM ELLERSLIE.

YESTERDAY MORNING'S WORK BY ARCHER. The track work at Ellerslie yesterday was not particularly interesting, although a large number of horses were worked. The No. 3 grass track was available for fast work and was freely used, but few were looking to make time. The going was much improved as a result of the fin© weather in the previous few days end the tracks were drier than they have been for several months. NO. 3 GRASS. The barrier at the mile post was in vse for the two-year-olds, who were allowed to sprint along the back on the outside of the course proper. From a barrier si art Dumblane, Armenia, and King Val were sent three furlongs, and they ran them in 39 2-ss, with Dumblane a shade in tront all the way. A number of other youngsters were also sent to the barrier, and among those to shape satisfactorily were Nankin Blue, Envoy, Justify, Nankin Blue and Envoy running two furlongs in 275. THE JUMPERS. Quinvardia (J. Sharkey) gave an indifferent display over the schooling hurdles. She barely got over the first and fell at the oecond. She was not persevered with any further. Glenotua (J. Stanway) was schooled over the pony hurdles and gave an improved display. NOTES FROM THE TRACK. The two-year-olds Justify (by Gay LadAssertive) and Attalad (by Gay Lad— Matatalhave had a fairly easy time lately, as they have had colds. They are all light again now and were among the youngsters to go to, the barrier yesterday. Attalad is growing fast and it is probable that he may be turned out for a time. One of the latest to contract a cold is the two-year-old Sir Russell, and he is at present on the easy list. It is ifot intended to get Sir Russell ready for early racing, so that the stoppage in his work will not be against him. Mention of this youngster reminds me that his dam. Miss Flosb, re- ] cently produced a fine colt foal to' Lucullus. It is on the cards that the two-year-old Dumblane will change hands and pass on to a southern buyer. Negotiations are in progress for a sale, and the youngster will be inspected by the prospective buyer in the course of a feiv days. _ Dumblane has been showing promise in hiß work and at present seems about the best of the juveniles at headquarters.

Ballymoy 11. directed attention to her spring prospects by the attractive manner in which she accomplished her work yesterdav. Although she was wide out all the way, she recorded the best sprinting effort and could have bettered the time if such bad been desired. Sprint events at the spring meetings are going to be difficult to win, but Ballymoy 11. is a capable sprinter and ahe seems one oi the best prospects among the local brigade. The Avondale Cup candidate Cohesion has not been required to do anything strenuous since his arrival at Ellerslie and he has been confined to trotting and cantering on the sand. The chestnut is in good heart after hia recent racing, and, with the work he will get in the next t?eek, should strip in capital order on the nay. The three-year-old Valsier is working along steadily at Ellerslie under the direction of W. Ryan and is showing improved condition. Up to the present Ins tasks have not b«en of a very strenuous order, but he was allowed to move aiong over four furlongs on the sand yesterday with Scararoouche, and they covered the distance in 55 4-ss. A hack that is moving along nicely in his preparation for the spring campaign is Creation. So far he has only one minor success to his credit, but he promises to be a better horse this season than last er.a s stake or two should come hia way * hen (he c'ass is n-'-t too strong. Creation proved I too good for Slump in a six-furlongs gallop yesterday and recorded quite a creditab-'e effort. For a hunter Levinside has quite a lot of pace and be should win races m his class when properly seasoned. To oate be has only had one start and with a little luck he may have won on that occasion instead of being third. Levinside will probably contest hack events at the spring meetings and should not be disgraced, e-en though he mav not wtn. By the time tbe Waikato Hunt meeting is at hand he should be thoroughly ready to tackle the hunters Vow that he is getting a little sprinting Tidal is beginning to liven upland is infusing more vim into bis work. A few races should do a lot for this cc'.t and hs progress in the nest few months wij! he closely followed by trackwatchers Tidal js developing all the titne, and, wnen be reaches fn!l development, will be n %ery attractive horse. He has t<;e appearance lof a good o?:* 4 . snd looks wi 1 prove ..ecep- ' f>>e if be fails to make a racehorse later ! on | Town Guard continues to progress sattsi fnrtorilv and he has been acoomniishmg i i,;« work to the sstiafacticn of his admirers. I the fell -w was worked en the -ar.d 1 vesterdsy and 'be moved resolrtelv over s.i ; furl«ncs" in 1.50 3-S. Town Guard is one i of the most promising horses _at E-ers-ie ' and with ordinary luck should do well oter j short courses this season Nothing among the local hacks is_ sprinting better than Fiery Lad. w'bo has recorded several smart track efforts lately. There can be no doubt that be is very well at present, but he may be hard t;" 1 place to sdvan t age. ss he does not re'ish joumey* beyond six furlongs and on past performs noes is nothing more, than a moderate. That good I'ttle _ sprinter TToariri was a v's'tor to Ellerslie yesterdav and was allowed to stride over » few htrlcnsrs In heavy going this horse is or.e of the lest •urinte's in this province, bnt as soon as the tracks get bard fee nsnally go«s very sere and has invariably shown bis best form in the winter. Yesterday be moved fairly free'y, but »pl>e&red & hit'.e on the X-retty sid*.
