CANTERBURY NOTES.

OPERATIONS AT RICCARTON. FOOTFALL GALLOPS WELL. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] CHRISTCHURCH, Thursday. W. G. Hobba left this evening for Wellington with Bachelor, who will be shipped to Sydney to-morrow. The Absurd geldir.g has given his trainer a lot of trouble. At i« thought that he is suffering from rheumatism and it is hoped that the warmer climate of Australia will effect a cure. The Southland light-weisht jockey, L. J. Ellis, is coming north for the Ashburton bounty Racing Club's meeting next week. In the meantime his only riding engagement is Silver Paper in the Trial Plate. The two-vear-old sister to Streamer by , Paper Money from Tortrix went lame a few days ago and W. G. Hobos found it necessary to give her a spell, but he is hopeiuL that she will be able to resume work shortly. _ . . , Miss Minerva has finished her racing .■aveer and she will take up stud duty. Miss Minerva is by Winkie from Lady Mmerva <*he has never been a sound mare and as she is now eight year 3 old her retirement was not unexpected. The three-yaar-old gelding Amor by Archery from Warlove has gone sore. i. tl. Gillett does not regard the matter seriously and. although gelding has been eased up. lit mav be in commission again belore long. ~ . The Martian gelding Meteorite is the latest addition to F. P. Claridge s team. Meteorite won the McLean Stakes as a two-vear-oid, but he had a short racing career. He is now nine years old and he has been in retirement for more than four Agrion and Philippie are expected home from Sydney next week, but it is understood that R. J. Mason will have a holiday in Sydney until after the spring meeting of the Australian Jockey Club to be held early next month. The programme mapped out for Martarmu this season was to have been opened with the Dunedin Guineas. F. Christmas is of opinion, however, that the Martian colt will be benefited by a race prior to the classic event and after consulting with the owner. Mr. J. Porter, it has been decided to start him in a seven-furlong hack race on the first day of the Dunedin meeting. Kenmore is going along well in his P ro " pa ration for spring engagements. The IN as sau gelding is now nine years old and he has done no racing for three years, but provided he remains sound he looks certain to earn some stake money this season. He was a brilliant galloper earlier in his career Paper Boy has been galloping freely of late and he may atone this season for past disappointments. He beat a big field in the Cashmere Plate last year, but a second and two thirds were his next best efforts. Footfall galloped nine furlongs this morning, Starfiight accompanying him for the last seven. The cup horse hit out freely, registering 2.1 1-5 for the full iourney and he finished well. Don Jose covered seven furlongs in attractive style. He should be very useful. Master Clarence and Hoylake Doth went -veil in a five-furlong sprint, but Assurance did not please, finishing a couple of lengths 1 away. Bolero hit out freely in a six-furlong gallop and he looks like paying his way. Malmsly had slight advantage over Miss | Trillim this morning in a three-furlong j 1 sprint, run in 36 l-ss—a very smart effort Malmsly is a four-year-old mare by Clar ■ enceux from Sharmilla. Rapier and Chickwheat were associated over seven furlongs this morning, finishing ■ their task in 1.31 from a slow start. Rapier had to be ridden hard over the last furlong to catch his mate. I TAKAPUNA JOCKEY CLUB. PROGRAMMES FOR SEASON. ! The committee of the Takapuna Jockey Club has issued the programmes for the two meetings to be held at the North Shore this season. In the face of heavy expenditure for alterations in the course undertaken last year and the revenue having decreased under several headings, a curtailment in the amount o f prize-money was quite anticii paled. The prize-money allotted for this season's meetings amount to .£12,650, compared with £14,025 last season. The s\ m apportioned to the spring meeting is J 6150 . and that to the summer meeting t6500. , In making the reductions the T.J.C. Comi mittee has wisely allowed the minor riices to stand as previously, and the principal . reduction made is in connection with the [ Takapuna Cup, which is reduced from ; £I3OO to £IOOO. Though a reduction of s stakes to the amount of £1375 has to be • noted, the committee, in fixing the stakes I at £12,650 for the season, has maintained I the programmes in connection with the North Shore meetings in an attractive form. ; FORTHCOMING MEETINGS. AUCKLAND RACING CLUB. The programme in connection with the Auckland Racing Club's Spring Meeting will require attention from horseowners today, nominations for all handicap events closing at 5 p.m. with the secretary, Mr. W. S. Spence. Forfeits for the Great Northern Guineas and Welcome Stakes must be declared by the same hour.

AVONDALE JOCKEY CLUB.
