ANSWERS TO CORRESPONDENTS. " Bonzer."—l. The placed horses in the Auckland Cup of 1908 were:—All Red (8.6), Bobrikoff (8.12). and Paritutu (7.4). 2. Bobrikoff carried 8.8 when he won the Auckland Cup of 1912. NOTES BY PHAETON. DOUGHTY RAPINE. Judging from statements to hand bearing on the unfortunate mishap that befel Rapine some little time back, it would seem unlikely that the game son of Martian will again grace the race-track. Having reached his eighth year. Rapine was, of course, included among the veterans some time back, but that he was entitled to be accepted as a well-preserved veteran he furnished convincing proof in his concluding engagement at seven years old in May last at Hastings, when he carried 'he steadier of 10.7 to victory in tha Hawke's Bay Cup. Rapine's winning record is, indeed, an attractive document, for it is not confined to New Zealand courses, several weight-for-age victories in Australia being included therein. Up to the end of last season Rapine had contested 66 races and his record stands as follows:

Unlst. 2nd. 3rd. 4th. placed. At 2yrs . . 3 1 0 0 4 At 3yrs . . 7 3 0 0 4 At 4yrs .. 5 1 1 0 7 At syrs . . Did not race. At 6yrs . . 4 5 1 1 6 At 7yrs . . 4 4 2 23 14 4 1 24 An interesting feature in Rapine's record is the number of victories in " cup" events down to his credit, the ' following races bearing the title being won by the Son of Martian:—Wellington Cup (1923). Napier Cup (1924), Auckland Cup (1925). Trentham Gold Cup (1926), Awapuni Gold Cup (1926), Canterbury Cup (1926), G. G. Stead Gold Cup (1926), and the Hawke's Bay Cup (1927). Mr. A. B. Williams has good reason to remember the spring day in November. 1920, when he bought Rapine as a yearling for 450gns. The son of Martian and Pineta, proved a golden speculation to the Hawke s Bay sportsman. A computation of his winnings shows that he captured £20,320 in prizVmoney. / MISCELLANEOUS NOTES. The New Zealand-owned mare Piuthair is credited with training on well since she reached Randwick and as she figures among the entrants for the Hill Stakes to be run to-moiTow that race may see her under <ulk. The Takapuna Jockey Club caters liberally for the juvenile division at Jts meetings. The prize money allotted to the four races confined to the two-year-olds at the spring and summer meetings amounts to £1650. Unless a cumber of keen judges are astray in their judgment, the trainer of Star Stranger is confronted with a very difficult task to have the son of Martian ready to stay out two miles properly by New Zealand Cup day (November 5). The forthcoming month will be a busy one in' Auckland racing circles. First comes the Auckland Racing Club's meeting, which is fixed to be held on October 8 und 10; then follows the Auckland Trotting Club on October 15 and 19. Waikato Racing Club on October 21 and 22, Waikato jiunt on October 24, and the Thames Jockey Club on October 29 and 31. The Rosehill meeting, which takes place to-morrow, may be expected to find "Limerick and Commendation measuring strides in the Hill Stakes, which is run over a mile, but on the form displayed by tho first-named in the Warwick Stakes and Chelmsford Stakes there need not bo rny uncertainty as to the question of favouritism.

The Rosehill Guineas, which carries a stake of £IOOO, conies up for decision tomorrow. The Leighton—Hay on gelding Stiettcn, owned by Mr. W. G. Stead, figures among the horses left in the race at the date of the final payment, but, the fact of his not having yet contested a race, the New Zealand gelding is regarded very much as an unknown Quantity. The Polydamon—Nordica gelding Cohesion has been brought to Auckland in order to fulfil engagements at Ellerslie, and as he figures at the minimum for the Avondale Cup be will probably be given an opportunity to distinguish himself in that race. Last season Cohesion contested 18 races, and he won six of his engagements in hack company. Cohesion's best performance in open company was his second to Rapine in the Hawke's Bay Cup. in which event, with 3st. 51b. the best of the weights, compared with the leader, be was beaten half a length in a solidly-run mile and a-half. At the Wanganui meeting last Saturday Cohesion (7.6) finished third to Tresham (7.8) and Alloway (7.9) in the Higgie Handicap, which event was run over a mile and aQuarter. The announcement from Sydney that the New Zealand pair, Merry Mint and Royal Legend, are '"Older a cloud at present owing to leg troubles having come against each is unpleasant reading, for the prospects of the first-named horse, playing an important part in the settlement of the A.J.C. Derby were viewed in a promising light. it is. of course, quite possible for Merry Mint s trouble to be successfully dealt with, enabling Inm to complete his Derby preparation in a fitting manner. With regard to Royal Legend, the ailment that has come against the son oi Linicnd appears to be more serious, and he may have to be eased up. The training work during the next week may be expected to re\eai whether Merry Mint and Royal Legend tie likely to be contestants at the big spring meeting which opens at Raud*ick on October 1.
