DESTRUCTION BY FIRE.
OUTBREAK AT DUNEDINL. BUSINESS PREMISES SUFFER* EXTENSIVE DAMAGE TO STOCK* [BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT. ■? DUNEDIN, Thursday.' A destructive fire broke out in Moran's Buildings, in the Octagon, at 11.45 night, in the premises of Radio Suppling Ltd. When the brigade arrived the fire had obtained a good hold in the base-, ment. A smart save was made, but the fire was not extinguished until much valuable stock had been destroyed. .Extensive damage was done to the valuable stock of gramophones, radio sets and gramophone records. The radio stock was insured in the Standard Office for £llOO. A stock of pianos, pianolas, gramophones and records was owned by Home Recreations, of Christchurch. At the rear of the ahop and above the basement is the tailoring establishment of Mr. D. Aitken, where considerable damage was done to suitings by fire, smoke and water. The stock was insured in the United Office. The adjoining premises, the Dewing Machine Company, were affected by smoke, but the stock, which was insured for £2OO in the Sun Office, will be easily cleaned. Smoke also did slight damage in the Catholic Book Depot, the stock of which was covered in the Atlas Office. On the other side of the Radio ahop the stock carried by C. Billsborongh, cleaner and dyer, was damaged by water. The stock was insured for £IOO in the National Office. Practically, all the stock of model frocks and ladies' attire in the shop of Miss Rodgers was reduced in value by the smoke. The insurances total £I7OO in the New Zealand Office.
DWELLING AT BAKOIOSA. ALARMS NOT WORKING PROPERLY, [BX TELEOEAPH. OWK COEEXSPON CEKT. J J CHRISTCHDRCH. Thursday. A practically new four-roomed bungalow, owned and occupied by Mr. F. Hunt, of Rangiora, was gutted by fire this morning. Nearly all the furniture also was burned. Because of the new fire alarms in the borough not working properly, considerable time was lost in summoning the brigade, otherwise the house might have been saved. The house was insured for £7OO and the furniture for £250, both in the Alliance Office. / HOUSE AT RAETIHI. ' ' ' +- . BRIGADE'S HOPELESS FIGHT. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] RAETIHI, Thursday. Fire destroyed a five-roomed hoqsa owned by Mr. J. A. Parkes "and occupied by Mr. C. Harris and family. The outbreak was first noticed at 1.30 this morning. The brigade arrived promptly, but the fire had a good hold and it was impossible to save anything. It is believed the fire was caused through a defective chimney;' " > " ; The house.and outbuildings were insured for £BSO, .and the furniture also was insured. ' r : I PRODUCE STORE BURNED. STOCK WORTH £750 LOST. ' [BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT. ] MORRINSVILLE. Thursday. A large store shed owned by Carr, Pountney and Company, Ltd., Morrinsville, situated near the railway station, was destroyed by fire, at about one o'clock this morning. The shed contained 50 tons of chaff, 20 tons of baled hay, and 25 tons of superphosphate, and some plant, the total value being £750. None of the stock was saved. When the brigade arrived the shed was blazing fiercely, and nothing could be done to save the contents. <
