ALLIES FOR LABOUR.
CO-OPERATORS JOIN PARTY. VOTE AT BRITISH CONGRESS., (Received Juno 8, 5.5 p.m.) A. and N.Z. LONDON. June 7. The Co-operative Congress at Cheltenham approved of affiliation with the Labour Party by 1960 votes to 1843. The opposition to affiliation was based on the belief that politics would introduce strife and bitterness into the cooperative movement. The advocates of affiliation laid stress on the fact that an agreement between the executives of the two organisations had been reached on the initiative of the co-operators. The Labour Party and the co-operators, they argued, alike aimed at common ownership, while Conservatives and Liberals insisted on private ownership and the exploitation of the land, capital, transport and banking.
