BRITAIN AND EGYPT.
THE ARMY CONTROVERSY. BINDING PLEDGES DEMANDED. (British Official Wireless.) (Received June 8, 5.5 p.m.) Times. RUGBY. June 7. The Government has instructed the High Commissioner for Egypt, Lord Lloyd, to inform the Egyptian Government that Britain requires definite and binding pledges regarding the Egyptian army. Britain is determined to insist on a final and satisfactory settlement which will prevent the army from becoming an instrument for use in connection with political intrigues. The reply sent by the Egyptian Government to the British Note has been carefully considered in London. Although tho reply reflected the conciliatory tone of the British Note and expressed in general terms a desire to co-operate it is understood that it lacked definiteness on certain specific points. Elucidation is being sought in this re spect and conversations aro being continued in Cairo. EGYPTIANS TOO EVASIVE. BRITISH STAND A FIRM ONE. (Received Juno 8, 10.57 p.m.) A and N.Z. LONDON, Juno 8. Protracted and difficult negotiations with (he Egyptian Government seem to be indicated by the ovasivo attitude rcuectcd in its reply to the British Note. Tho memorandum sent by tho Foreign Office to Lord Lloyd will enablo him to make a series of pertinent inquiries, and upon the answers given to them will depend Britain's future course of action. It is understood the Foreign Office made it clear that there can bo no bargaining o ntho subject of the defence of Egypt, for which Britain intends to remain solely responsible.
