DEVOURED BY SHARKS.

WRECK IN THE PHILIPPINES VICTIMS' DREADFUL FATE. SEA MONSTERS SURROUND PREY By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. (Received Juno 8, 6.26 p.m.) A. and N.Z. MANILA. Juno 7. Survivors of the wreck of the interisland steamer Negros, which foundered in a typhoon in the Philippines, on May 28, arrived at Manila on board the • steamer Masbate. They declared that tho victims of the disaster were devoured by sharks while clinging to the wreckage, which is in opposition to the prior belief that they were drowned. Eyewitnesses described how the sharks hovered close at hand while the ship foundered. Immediately after the passengers, who were precipitated into the furious sea, had fought their way to pieces of the wreckage to which the victims clung, the sharks snatched them away like flies. The cries of the unfortunate people could bo heard above the roar of the waves. The belief has been advanced that a school of sharks was near .when the ship foundered, and that, attracted by the sounds, they swam toward their prey. One survivor, who was cast on top of some wreckage, described how he ate his clothes, which satisfied his hunger, and left no ill-effects.
