ACCUSED ALTERS PLEA.
SERIOUS CHARGE ADMITTED.
Placed on trial in the Supreme Court yesterday on a charge of indecently assaulting a male, Joseph Patrick O'Neill (Mr. Gatenby) altered his plea of not guilty to one of guilty. Mr. Gatenby said prisoner at first believed he was charged with a more serious offence. Counsel asked whether prisoner could be released on bail pending sentence.
Mr. Justice Herdman: This is a serious matter, Mr. Gatenby. 1 certainly cannot allow the man his liberty.
Mr. Gatenby then suggested that His Honor should get as full a report as possible from the probation officer. Tne report, he thought, would be greatly in favour of prisoner. Prisoner was remanded until to-morrow for sentence.
